As a tourist extraordinaire (!), I'd recommend Bath (beautiful, lots to do, romantic and elegant), Edinburgh (loads of fun, great pubs and nice b and b's), and York (great walks, lovely town, shopping fun too).

Can't remember very well where I stayed - Edinburgh at a b and b on Craigmillar Rd. Bath - small private hotel thing just outside town (cheaper). York - some b and b which was lovely!
