I know it's not the sort of place you think of straight away, but what about Newcastle Upon Tyne.

Absolutely fabulous shopping, a massive beering area called the Big Market, the Quayside which is great for your posher bars.

Brilliant Clubs which are always playing great music.

Great restaurants, lovely hotels (we stayed at Malmaison at the Quayside over New Year).

The Metro Centre is really well thought out and is great for absolutely anything you need.

You're close to Scotland and Hadrian's Wall.
