Dyeing your own shoes - Wedding Forum

I'm fast running out of time to sort my shoes out and dye them red (cos I'm a dozy cow seeing as I've had them since Feb and had picked out the red colour I want back in the summer)

I can send them back to the company I bought them from or another website to have them dyed for just under £20 but I need my shoes for my fitting on Jan 14th. With Xmas in-between I'm worried they won't be back in time. If I wait until after my fitting to send them off, it's then cutting it fine to get them back in time for the wedding.

I've rung around loads of local shops and they will only dye your shoes if you bought them from there in the first place. I've rung the people making my dress and they are out of suggestions too.

So... has anyone ever dyed their own shoes? Was it easy? Did you get the shade you wanted? Otherwise, all alternative suggestions and ideas gratefully received

Are the shoes satin or silk etc? This product is meant to do satin shoes I think:-

Oooh thanks Karen, I may just give that a go. I thought Dylon would do something for a DIYer. The shoes are dyeable satin, I made sure of that before I bought them, knowing that I'd be getting them done once we'd settled on a shade of red. At least they're hidden under my layers of petticoat and dress if it goes wrong

My friend did it in a red shade for her BMs and the one thing that she forgot to do was Scotchguard them so on the day there they were doing it! If it had rained or spilled a drink on them, she was terrified the red would splash on her ivory dress!

They turned out perfect through.

try dance shops - they may do bespoke colours for dance costumes

Well I've just ordered the dye and will give it a go.

I'll buy the scotchguard (thanks P) once I'm sure I'm happy with the result. If it's a disaster, I can still get them re-dyed that way.

have you called the company you bought them from to see how long it WOULD take to get them done?

They only respond to emails, they don't have a call centre, plus it's more Royal Mail I'm worried about as loads of stuff has gone awry lately.

That and the £18/£19 plus postage that it costs which I just don't have whereas I can do it myself for £3!

Either way, I have to buy my own scotchguard as it's not included in the shoe dyeing service anyone offers.

ah well no problem then, least its something that is 'hidden' rather than openly on display! im sure it'll be fine, Ive dyed lots of stuff and it always goes fine xxx

Ta, the instructions look easy enough. As long as they're red not white it should pass.

We had ours dyed in a local shoe shop - about £5 - £6 I think. They can only dye to a darker colour.
