Default Home made cake

Right, in order to keep costs down myself, my mother and my sister are going to have a bash at making the wedding cake. It will probably be 1 of fruit cake and 2 of sponge/madiera.

Did anyone make their own cake and if so do you have any recipes/tips?

Also, decorating tips /pics would be handy as well.

We made our own.I had to hire the tins as the ones i wanted were 18" 16" and 14".Just used a fruit cake recipie and had to work out how much more was needeed.
Why not try a cake decorators for tins and decorating ideas.

Have seen fresh flowers used.

The library have some ace wedding cake books if you want to do it yourself, I had a look once and they were really straightforward to do.

This was the one I was going to go for.It was lots of sugar roses over a plain white cake but I had a simpler one as when I tried to make the roses they looked more like cabbages so the cake shop matched the flowers on my bouquet for a lot less than I thought it would have been.

Babyicebean that is good to note. I think we will probably make ours a bit simpler than that mind you - I was thinking of decorated with fresh flowers.

There are some good books about that you could probably get from the library.

There are loads of websites about too so they might be worth a look for some ideas. These ones have some nice looking cakes that might give you some ideas.
http://www.cakesbyann.co.uk/
http://www.cooks-weddingcakes.com/we...pictures.shtml
http://www.thecakestore.com/weddingcakes.htm

Quite a few people get the cakes from M&S or one of the supermarkets and then decorate them. Might be worth doing that and apparently they are pretty nice.

My mum's friend made our cakes (we had 2) but she did a trial run of the main one. She just did one small tier and decorated it for us to get an idea of what it would be like. It might be a good idea to have a practice run first.

Yeah we are definitely going to practice quite a bit first, thats why I am thinking about it now. We don't want it all fruit cake though as I hate fruit cake, so we want two tiers to be madeira sponge. Do places like m&s do madeira as well as fruit cake do you know?

LOL
I started it as a hobby too......and went proffesional after 10 years and 5 years at college.......but I used to charge those prices at the start as well, it helps get you on the market
I must admit, that is a very good price, and if you have seen samples of her work before, then all the better, ask her about a deposit, then she's less likely to change her mind lol

miss cupotea
why not try hiring your tins from a cake shop........ebay can be expensive (believe me I've been there) I paid £70 for a set of tins, which was still cheaper than my supplier, but then I'm going to use mine lots and lots.......are you ?
it's an expense if your only going to use them once, so ask about hiring
