Default Knitters.....

Ok bear with me here.....

As I am under orders to get some amount of rest and there is only so long I can spend in the bath, gran in her wisdom has suggested I learn to knit.

OK?

So other than knitting squares and sewing them together are there any REALLY REALLY easy things I can do.I can do garter stitch(what gran calls it,makes things look dishclothy) and the other one which looks like ridges.

Any ideas as to what I can do and what I need to get?

How about one of those cute little hats for when baby is first born? I think that they are easier than most things...mind you, I never got beyond dishcloths and scarves, so best ignore me!

I have a really easy cardigan pattern somewhere, which is all in garter stitch, and is knitted in one piece. You would need to be okay with casting on and off though. I cannot for the life of me remember where it is though. I have loads of knitting books upstairs. I shall try to remember to look later when I go up. I could scan it and email it. In terms of yarn, I love Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino. That knits beautifully. Alternatively my Debbie Stoller Stitch and Bitch book has some great patterns in. There is a keyhole scarf that you could do for your girls. I shall have a look and return with more ideas tomorrow.

I can cast on and off, it just takes a while.

Also oh great guru of knitting when you finish each row do you have to keep turning it round so you are always going from the left needle to the right needle?

I have been knitting a lot recently, mainly for the wee critlet. I have managed to almost finish 2 cardigans, a hat and some booties. A teddy bear is next on the list. i tend to pop into my local john lewis and have a browse through all the lovely books and leaflets and then choose the wool and needles that I need to go with the patterns.

I have a booklet called first steps which is a sirdar booklet. It basically shows you exactly how to knit and gradually increases the difficulty of the projects, using new skills gradually. It starts with a really sweet hat made from a square of garter stitch knitting, with a cute blanket made of garter stitch squares, and then shows you how to make a shaped garter stitch hat, a jacket made of 6 garter stitch squares (again very cute, especially with a hat made in the same colour). It goes through 18 projects, up to a hodded jumper made in stocking stitch. it was about a fiver I think. The other good thing about it is that all the projects use the same wool, and only a couple of sizes of needles.

This is the book I'm talking about, http://www.theknittingparlour.co.uk/Prd095.html

And this is the yarn that goes with it,
http://www.theknittingparlour.co.uk/Prd085.html there are not all the colours on this site though, http://www.mcadirect.com/shadecards/snugdk.htm this shows the colours better. I think it is a yarn that you should be able to get in any good wool shop. You can make most of the projects in the book with 1 or 2 50gram balls of this wool and some 4mm and 3 1/4 mm knitting needles.

Good luck, let me now if you want me to pm you any pictures of the different things in the book.

I like to knit baby blankets, I find it very relaxing and mindless. If you do a search for free knitting patterns there are loads of sites to choose from.

Weez's book looks good, though the yarn is cheaper and they have more colours at Dianne's - http://www.cpu-enterprises.com/index.html Having said that, they are charging £2 more for the book!

Ok the book arrived this morning. But I have on advice from some sweet old lady in Hobbycraft, she didn't work there she was buying yarns for a really complicated multicoloured interlinked patterned blanket, and she pointed me in the direction of a hat and scarf pattern which I could use for the eldest child. The wool is called WOW and it is a fuzzy wool.

I have no idea as to how to attach a photo as himself decided to use a newer version of paintshop and I have no idea as to how to use it.
