Question How do u start??

Having read all your threads about cross stiching i quite fancy giving it a go............but don't have a clue where or what to start on.........should i start with something small and uncomplicated??

Anyone have any suggestion on what sort of project is a good one to start on??

Thanks for the help
Gail

I think one of the best things you can do is go to a newsagents and buy a cross stitch magazine that has a free kit on the front with all the things you need. The magazine also explains how to do the stitching and where best to start. It'll also have other small charts in that you can attempt.

Magazines range in price from £2-99 upwards and good ones to start with are 'The world of Cross-stitching' or 'Cross-Stitcher'

Hope this helps!

Yep, I agree with Beth. I'm not sure what kits are generally given out with the mags (apart from them being small) but I'd say that a greetings card kit would be good if any are being given away this month. With that kind of kit you get the card, so you have an instant way to display your work without the hassle of framing. You also get an instant hit of gratification/smugness

Here is an excellent tutorial on cross-stitching: http://www.dnai.com/~kdyer/faqs/xstitch_tut.html It does go into considerable detail on some of the major debates in the craft (does the thread have a 'nap' or not?) but you can ignore this and just hop straight to the parts about starting off stitching, making the stitch and finishing off the stitch.

Let us know how you get on!!

Small and simple is always a good place to start to begin with. Buy a cross stitch magazine and try the freebie on the front!

Thats a good idea - i kind of jumped into the deep end right away but luckily i am enjoying it.

At least if you get a small one from a mag and you dont like it, you haven't spent lots of money finding out its not for you
