Default Cake Edging

This is a question for anyone making their own cake, or I suppose for anybody who has recently seen a wedding cake. My Mum, who is making my wedding cake, is just about to ice it, and is concerned about what she is going to put around the edge of the cake on the board. Does anyone have any idea, or have the boards just been left bare?

We are having purple ribbon around the actual bottom of the cake, and a string of AB beads (to match the dress and tiara - full on co-ordination here!) on top of that (which she is worried about getting level) and then real flowers on the tops. I think that she is worried about it looking too homemade, although I think homemade looking is good. So are there any professional-type cake decorators out there who can help us?

Thanks for any advice.
Nicola

Hi Nicola

My baker's asked me to supply ribbon in the colour of my choice to go round the edge of the board. They gave me the measurements, and it was nothing fancy, it just took away the scruffy looking edging!

i'm not an expert so i might be wrong but i think you can do a number of things to sort this problem

1 - continue the iceing over the board
2 - use ribbon to cover any problem areas
or 3 - pipe royal iceing around the bottom edge of the cake to cover the join

Hi,

My mum is icing my cake (she did a course especially - bless) and she intends to ice the board.

The only prob is that Nick's mum has made the cake and the bottom tier is enormous - two inches too big - how on earth do you ice that????
