Making dresses? Help/advice - Wedding Forum

How important is it to stick to the recommended fabrics on the back of a pattern (I've bought Buttericks patterns for ickle BMs)

I think they recommend materials because of the way they will hang when the dress is done, and also the seam allowances might need to change with the fabric, or the needle size, tension setting on the machine, etc... If you want something different to what they suggest, people in fabric shops should know what would be a good alternative.

I would love to make my own clothes, keep saying I'll give it a try one day but have not as yet!
