Default Advise needed from Crafty Brides - Sewing machine

I would like to get a sewing machine for Christmas (don't laugh!) and haven't a clue where to begin looking!
I would like the most quiet one around that can sew tough fabric as well as delicate. and also simple to use.

any ideas?
ta!

I want to get a new sewing machine too. I thought that I would wait to see how much I used my old one first. But I am currently making a patchwork quilt and am getting fed up of trying to lift my old one which must weigh almost as much as I do. I was going to wait and see if anyone had one in a sale after Christmas, but if somebody suggests a nice one for you, I may look into it sooner. I don't want anything flash, just easy to lift, with running stitch, zig-zag and buttonholes and easy to thread. If it does too much then there is more to go wrong!

I think mine is a Brother, and it's really easy to use. The stitches are fairly basic - straight and zig-zag with a few variations on a theme - and just 2 main dials to adjust; one for the stitch pattern that you want (match number to picture), and one for the width, if you're doing zig-zag. I don't know how much heavy fabric it can take, but I've put several layers through on it during my shoe-making course (best not to ask!) with no problems - I think it's more of a needle/tension issue, i.e. thick fabric, thick needle, tighter thread... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

have a look on www.dooyoo.co.uk - http://www.dooyoo.co.uk/servlets/Sea...tems&x=29&y=16

That gives you hundreds of other peoples opinions on sewing machines in general and specific makes too.

I think I'll go for a camcorder instead! I can understand them atleast! I'l buy a sewing machine in the sales when I know what I'm actually looking for!

Thanks for all the advise though! It will be put to good use!
