Default West Coat of America

Bit of advice please Groovers.

Our plan for our holidays at the end of September is to spend 2 weeks in the US of A. The reasoning behind this is that

a. I've never been (K has )
b. We're going to *cough* TTC at the end of the year, so it may be the last chance for a distance holiday for a while.

We were thinking of starting in San Francisco for a few days, then travel for a week and then return to San Francisco. We've found a decent package for flights/San Francisco hotel, but we were going to "make up" the rest of the holiday by just hiring a car and booking in at motels along the way. My question is, does anyone have an idea of the average cost of motels in America???

Road Trip!!!!!

Ta in advance for any words of wisdom

Jx

I dont know the exact cost J, but I'd have thought it would be pretty cheap compared to the uk.

When we were in San Francisco (2 years ago) average cost for a Holiday Inn was approx $60.00 per night.

I'm sure you can get them much cheaper though.

Word of warning - don't stay in the heart of Fishermans Wharf. If you can, just stay on the outskirts of it - Fishermans Wharf was much too touristy for my liking. Loads of tacky touristy shops selling plastic stuff.

San Francisco's beautiful, but that bit has sort of turned into Southend on Sea.

I hope you have a wonderful time.

I can't remember the name of the hotel thats "named", but it looked nice and it was used as a setting for "The Maltese Falcon", must try and find the photo tonight (unless K is reading this? ), I know its not Fisherman's Wharf though Dawnie : phew icon :

We were going to do this as our honeymoon but I panicked at not being properly arranged!! The first of soon to be many stupid bride panicky moments!!! We will do it though cos it sounds amazing, we only started doing initial investigations into it but found that there are some really good guide books in the book shops that help with planning this kind of thing...... I'll try and fish out the one I've got at home so that I can post the name for you....

Sorry I haven't been more helpful!!

Thanks for taking the time to answer everyone. You are all s

I stayed in San Francisco a number of years ago, and whilst not as marvellous as most Americans seem to think it is, it is a lovely place to stay.

Any more help greatly appreciated

No advice at all since I've never been but have to say it sounds like a great trip! Can I come?

Oh no, I might be a bit busy at the end of September....

Yay - San Fran is great!

My sis in law lives out in San Diego and we went there in 2001 and did a road trip from San D to San F going inland on the way up and then coming back along the coast road. On both occasions, we did the trip in one day but I would advise against that if you want to go exploring anywhere! Hehe.

Anyway, I think there are a number of american websites that deal in cheap motel accommodation, but from what I can remember, a budget motel on the Ocean Road is probably something like $40-$60 a night, depending on where you are. Also, they are EVERYWHERE! In each place there are probably 3 or 4 motels, so don't worry too much about not finding anywhere to stay.

You could very easily get to San Diego and back within a week, and see lots of amazing scenery along the way too and it will be fantastic! Aaah, the memories!

If you want me to find out those websites, let me know.

Wow, that sounds great Jess. We did New Zealand by just pullingup to a town and finding somewhere that night so its heartening that there is a huge selection on that route. I guess there's no danger of them being the "charge by the hour" places too, hehe.

San Diego in a week, that sounds like a plan! I'd like to do the Universal Studios tour but terrified of getting lost in downtwon LA

Panic not J! I've done Universal too and it is right off an exit on the freeway, so you actually go nowhere near downtown LA! Having been there, I would say you won't be missing much if you go (to LA itself that is, Universal was fab!!).

Well, if you are used to doing the road trip thang in NZ then you will love California too. San Diego has a fantastic Zoo and Seaworld and has some really beautiful beaches.

Am v jealous!!! ( I know, I know, I am going again, but can only afford the flight, not to actually do anything while we are there! hehe).
