Spicey, i think you will have a fab time, especially if you have your own transport and a bit of time to spend.
We just found that organising things in a short time scale was not easy, we rang to book an island tour the afternoon we arrived and they said we would have to go to their office in the centre of town at 5.30 the next morning, then they would tell us if they had space for us! We later discovered that we could book the same tour through a desk in the hotel with no problem! Once we were on the tour it was fab, and they were happy to line up other activities and instructors for a whole range of activities.
If you like a bit of snorkelling with fishies then you might like the Hanauma bay marine park. It is stunning and the fish come right up to the shore to swim between your feet, it is shut on Tuesdays as an environmental measure.

If you want to go to pearl harbour and take the boat trip to the Arizona, then go
really early. We had an official guide book that we picked up at the airport, and it said that you could avoid queues by going early afternoon, it didn't mention that the boat trip is by ticket only and they only give out a limited number each day. So if you go early afternoon, your very unlikely to get a ticket! I didn't mind missing it, but Trent was a bit gutted.
They have some nice torchlighting and hula shows on the beach some evenings,(the torch lighting may sound dull, but the fit young men in next to nothing are anything but).
I hope you have a fab time, I think the lesson that we learnt from our trip was that asking the locals in hawaii is far more reliable than reading any local guide books. Have fun, I didn't mean to be at all negative, I just wouldn't want you to have any of the problems that we encountered, if they can be avoided
