America! Where would you go?
Niall and I have been thinking about planning a trip to America with some of our proceeds from the house sale (presuming we do sell at a profit!).
We've never been to the States before and don't really know where we should go. He's a bit of a civil war buff but I am most definitely not spending my holiday trailing round old battlefields so something that would suit both would be great.
Where have you gone or would you go? Anywhere you'd recommend?

New York City and San Francisco
Completely different, but both fabulous. SF isn't quite as fab as a lot of americans think it is, but we'll forgive them
NYC is a vibrant alive city, with marvellous museums, art galleries and SHOPPING!

Yeah, told N that as the exchange rate was so good at the minute, that the least he could do is whisk me off for a weekend's Christmas shopping in NYC...
He gave me the "husband look" and didn't answer
Oh well...
Thank you for suggestions! May be a while before we decide but will keep you updated...

I want to go to San Francisco just so I can walk down the street bare foot with flowers in my hair. I've wanted to do that since I heard the song as a kid and have promised myself that one day I'll get there.

I have been to a few different places, and my favourites were San Francisco and San Antonio, Texas. I stayed on a fantastic ranch in Texas too. Oh, and Fort Worth was great. Okay, I'll amend my recommendation - just go to Texas!

I hear ya Rach! I know that look only too well!
I would love to go to San Francisco for very similar reasons as Nik! (perhaps we were flower children in our pass lives Nik and did too much acid or something!!).

I have been to the US a lot over the last 8 years or so. I would suggest doing a fly drive trip, going to NYC for a few days and then driving out to Ghettysburg, which is actually really interesting, and then you could drive back via Washington maybe? It is really easy to find places to stay in the US. There are motels on every road practically, so you wouldn't need to book in advance for that part, just for NY. That way you and Niall get the best of both worlds and you get to see some of the country itself.
It is definitely a cool place to go on holiday.
Good luck with your decision!

ps. If you want sunshine, go to California, it is sunny all the time and the coast is extremely beautiful. A fly drive along the California coast is probably one of the most fab ways to spend your hols!
You are going to have an amazing time Claire!

Hi Rach
When we were booking our honeymoon we looked into the price of going to 2 locations and found it almost just as cheap to go to several locations.
We took a few weeks off and started off in Boston (which was lovely), then flew down to San Francisco. Highly recommended - Alcatraz is brilliant. My only recommendation would be to get a hotel out of the main 'holiday' areas. It was a bit Southend'ish looking for me but the place is fantastic on the whole. From there you can also do a day trip to the Napa Valley for wine tasting (yum) and also a day trip to Yosemite National Park which is outstanding!
We then flew down to LA and stayed within easy reach of Universal Studio's and Hollywood Boulevard (which was a bit scary). From there you can drive down to San Francisco - it's a couple of hours drive and well worth staying for a few nights as it's absolutely beautiful and definitely my favourite place in the whole of the US.
Finally we finished up in Vegas which is a scream! From Vegas you can see the Grand Canyon, Lake Mead, the Hoover Dam, Ethel M's chocolate factory (M&M's to you and I!). The shows in Vegas are amazing - everything's bigger than it should be and everyone's completely fake but what an incredible place.
Do you think you could talk Niall into doing a little tour? Only one lot of jet lag then too!!!

Thanks for all your suggestions. San Fran. seems to be the favourite, my cousin recommended it too!
Dawnie, your honeymoon sounds amazing!!
I'll have to get a guide book I think. I do like the sound of Texas though Nicola (and I'm sure you'll understand why!) and Niall quite fancies visiting Nashville too, so a southern states tour might be fun combined with an NYC shopping trip perhaps
Of course, the other suggestion was that we go to New Zealand.....
Hmmmm!

I did Texas as part of a country music type tour, though I can't remember who the operator was. It was a few years ago, but as far as I remember we started at a ranch in Bandera Texas, then drove to San Antonio, then a couple of days in Fort Worth. Then we flew to Nashville for a while and then Pigeon Forge (Home of Dollywood). We also went into North Carolina to Cherokee for a day, which was fantastic. There wasn't really that much focus on country music to be honest, but it was all fantastic.

It was absolutely fantastic the ranch. You met up at the corral for breakfast and either climbed on a haywagon or a horse and went miles for a big cook out. I took a horse once but they didn't seem that bothered when I told them I had never been on one before. They help you on at the start, but they don't help you off at the other end, or to get on after a huge breakfast! It was so funny! It was completely a guest ranch, as you didn't have to do anything other than lie by the pool if you didn't want to. Oh, I so want to go back now.....

Helloooooo..
I have been to New York and also to Florida and totally recommend either locations. Let me know if you want me to tell you my thoughts on either location though.
For our honeymoon, we're incorporating a trip to Las Vegas - but have heard good reports about it.
I think you will have a brilliant time wherever you go, please let us know where you decide Rachael.

No it wasn't that one, but that sounds great. I wasn't wild about Nashville to be honest, and I would love to go to New Orleans. It was the Mayan Dude Ranch in Bandera.

I'm pretty sure it was that ranch in this package. Looks great whatever but I suspect no civil war battlefields will mean that this isn't the chosen one!
