Question Top tips for long flights needed please.

I need your top tips on how to manage a 11 hour flight without getting too bored please. Also any must have products etc etc, i already have some homepathic stuff for jet lag. I know sleeping would be good but im the worlds worst at being able to sleep when travelling!

A puzzle book and a couple of good reads, a gameboy (if it's allowed) and a personal walkman (again if it's allowed). A travel pillow may also be good if you intend to snooze or even just watch the in-flight movies.

Drink lots of water - it'll keep you fresh and hydrated as well as make you keep getting up to go to the loo, which helps beat DVT on long-flights.

Then sit back and relax!

I hope that my child, looking back on today
Will remember a mother who had time to play;
Because children grow up while you're not looking,
There are years ahead for cleaning and cooking.
So, quiet now cobwebs go to sleep.
I'm nursing my baby, and babies don't keep.

I can't sleep on planes and was chatting to a friend who had always been the same until he tried ear plugs (I see a theme developing here!). I haven't tried it out as yet though.

Ear plugs are also good for the taking off and landing popping in the ears. You can pick them up from the airport.

I can't sleep generally on long flights - except for the time I had two seats to myself on the way back from Thailand - pure heaven! (it does pay to be a midget!).

What else - well also drink juices (tomatoe is particularly good and they generally serve it on flights). Reasons being it is said to balance the electorlites in the blood. (which are distrubed with such flights and this does not help jet lag). Also if you have a little TV blaket, bring it! They do supply ones on the plane but they are ichy and too light (and once or twice I have found them to smell). Bring on lavender oil as well as it will help sleep a bit more. Finally, get yourself one of those eye masks (the ones that you see in old movies to help to block out the light). Granted they do turn down the lights and "encourage" the people by windows to pull down the shutters but the mask is great for complete darkness.

Get a heavy moisturiser and apply on the plane after you spay water on your face. Planes are buggers for drying out your skin.

Yes, this is the stuff I bring with me on the plane - not much room for myself! If you can, order the vegitarian meal now for all of you. THe meat is crap generally (but not always) but also it is easier for the system to break down veg. Also there will be more carbs than protein so will enduce sleep (protein does the opposite).

Avoid the coffee and tea for the same reasons as above... as well as alcohol.

I am really jealous you know Claire!!

I get really bored when travelling and can never sleep. I take lots of books and magazines for something to do. Depending on who you are travelling with, you might have your own individual TV which is quite good. We had that when we went to Oz with Qantus and they had gameboy type games on there too which was ok. I've tried everything to try and sleep but for me I never can. I am a really light sleeper though. An eye mask thingy is good though and take a nice jumper or fleece as it can sometimes get chilly and the blankets are rubbish. Remember a moisturiser too as it is quite drying on the plane.

Try and relax too and you might want to take some sweets as I've found it can help with the popping ears when landing. I've had some really dodgy meals on planes so you might want to get a few nibbles to take with you and drink lots and lots of water.

Oh!! Bring as much water with you as possible - I hate the crap they serve on planes. It doesn't taste right somehow.

No Spice, I dare say you will not be able to bring knitting needles etc on the plane. I was going up to Glasgow once and whist standing in the que to the check in desk, there were two ladies there trying to persuade the girl at the desk to allow them to take with them as hand luggage a couple of those hiking sticks - you know, the ones with the big metal spikes at the ends. They could just not see what the problem was.... oh dear.

Hiya Claire

When I've flown over to the states, I've taken magazines with me and thats it generally.

Reason being for me, I tend to think that the time flies by quicker (for me) by watching the entertainment featured on the flight, and also listening to music with the headphones supplied.

Then, you'll probably get 2 main meals and a snacky thing which also eats away at some of the time.

Long flights are very very boring.

Hopefully some of the girls tips and advice will stop you from getting too bored.

Like you, I cannot sleep when flying. I am a terrible flyer, absolutely petrified, so sleep is the last thing I could do. But good luck to you.

Take care, Karen xx

Thanks girls. Will try and get an eye mask thingy and ear plugs and will put my skin drench moisturiser from Lush in my bag along with my lip service and tons of water and books, homepathic stuff and lavender oil.
Nids already suggested a poncho, which i know Simon has got me as part of my christmas pressie so i can wear it and also use it as a blanket!

I think they saw the big catterpillar on your brow and took em off you before phoning the American Airlines to inform them to capture you on CCTV - the footage is now probably shown on some dodgy funny comedy clips show!

Hahahaa just kiddin babe!

Sorry, Jo, I have not been to any of those places (well I flew into Bangkok but was there only for a few hours... in the airport).

Sorry I can't help! Hows about looking up the net on google? Temples are always interesting - also see if there are national parks near where you will be staying. Also perhaps contact the hotels and ask them where they would recommend visiting.

Good luck!

I love flying I'd even fly to the shops I would if I could. I'd fly everywhere and never get bored. I can't really give any advice about what to do because I just sit back and relax and make the most of the phone not ringing constantly, the kids not battling it out from their rooms to be the loudest with the music - I swear sometimes I'm living in a nightclub!

One thing I do though if it's a long flight is wear something really comfy for the flight but then get changed before landing so I'm all fresh.
