Default Vegas and where else?

As you know, we're all off to Viva Las Vegas next March for my parents 25th Wedding Anniversary and to say that we are all excited is a bit of an understatement!!

We want to go somewhere else in the states either on the way to Vegas or back home but cant really decide where it should be. Does anyone have anywhere that they would really recommend that has lots to see and that would fit in with our trip.

We're currently going through all the hotels trying to agree on which one we will be staying in too which is really hard as they all look excellent!! Its great that although we will stay in one, you can go in all the others anyway!!

Cant wait, cant wait, cant wait

Hiya Paula

I would have a stop over at New York - as if you haven't been before, I definitely thinks its a place to be seen.

What a wonderful holiday. I'd love to go there.

Have never been to the states so can't offer any advice really. A friend of mine went last autumn and did Las Vegas and San Francisco. They had a fantastic time so perhaps that would be an idea.

Having done the tour de States once or twice I would recommend a few places and give the pro's and cons.

San Francisco

I'd definitely recommend San Francisco. Alcatraz is a great tour and lots of fun (as long as you don't mind a short boat ride) and has lots of fantastic seafood restaurants. I would not recommend you stay in Fisherman's Wharf though. It's a bit like Southend on Sea these days and very commercial. I'd also recommend San Fran as a hub to get you to places like Yosemite National Park. It's a must do day out IMHO. Just the most beautiful place. The problem with that would be the time of year. Yosemite might still be quite seriously impassable in some places and you wouldn't see it at its best. Worth checking out though if you fancy. However, from San Fran you can also visit the Napa Valley and do the wine tasting tours.

Los Angeles

The pro's are great family day out places like Disney Land, California (which is much smaller than Disney World Orlando) and Universal Studio's, California which is absolutely fabulous! (dahling!)

You're also within a couple of hours drive of my very favourite place in the US - San Diego. Just the most stunning town and home of the world famous San Diego Zoo. Trust me when I say this is the best zoo in the world and I loved every minute of it. Not generally a great fan of zoo's but this place is doing so much good work!!!!

The downside of LA for me was the strip itself. I never felt safe there although it was very interesting to do the walk of fame reading all the famous signatures and Mann's Chinese Theatre.

It will be warm though!

Orlando

Non stop fun! If you decide on Orlando you'll not be disappointed. It is VERY plastic. Every person in every restaurant you go to will tell you to 'have a nice day' and there must be more body fat per capita wandering round Orlando than there is in any other place on the planet.

It's very false but then so is Vegas and a holiday should be an escape from reality. You've got the obvious attractions - Disney World, Wet and Wild, Universal Studio's etc but Disney also have two huge water parks, a downtown area for food and entertainment at night, their own animal park and Universal now have their Islands of Adventure (which I haven't been to yet - darn!). There's also Old Street which is an evening entertainment place with fairground rides etc. Well worth a visit if you've never been.

Also, will be nice and warm.

New York

I love New York but i'm not sure (and this will probably sound daft) if it's a place for a large family to be wandering around. To my mind NY's a place you go with your other half and just enjoy mooching around whilst everyone around you is making a mad dash from A to B. Just my personal opinion though. Attractions in NY are obvious so i'll not insult your intelligence by going through them but it's a wonderful town - can be done after Las Vegas and makes the jet lag a little more bearable when you get back to the UK as there's less time delay.

However, it will be feckin freezing!

The only other place I would recommend would be New England/Boston etc. Boston's a bit like NY but with a real English sort of air to it. Home of the Boston Tea Party and some really nice places to go and visit. Very nice if you just want to mooch around and take in all the old buildings. Quincy Market is a must - looks very much like Covent Garden and is a hive of activity with street performers and the like. Personally I wouldn't do Boston for more than 3 days as I don't think there's enough to do there for your average person. Our friends went further into New England and had a fantastic time though so I suppose it depends on where you end up there.

Good luck with your decision P. Was talking to Jac about getting together for some lunch soon so if you fancy you're welcome to join us and we can dissect things over a bottle of wine (or 6)

As for lunch, count me in - you could both come to me for the day (and into the evening no doubt!!) if you fancied? Text or call me and we can sort something

lol @ sounding like a guide book. Just glad I didn't sound like a know all!

If I were doing Vegas and Florida, i'd personally do Vegas first and then go to Florida. This would give you a shorter journey back and a little less jet lag as a result.

The other reason I would do it this way is that you can get over the initial time zone change just mooching round Vegas and enjoying the sights. I always find that I try to pack as much into Florida as possible and this will be much easier if you're already adjusted to the time change post Vegas.

Have a fab time!

Oh, and as for hotels in Vegas, the Bellagio is beautiful and defo the most luxurious hotel on the strip but i'd actually recommend Paris. It's beautiful.

Closely followed by the Venetian (gondolas do a ride round the outside through to the inside of the hotel ) and then for all you Egypt geeks (moi???) the Luxor which doesn't have elevators but instead has inclinators (they travel up inside the pyramid at a 45 degree angle fact fans!)

you must take a trip to the grand canyon which is amazing and if you can do a helicopter ride, i never got the chance but heard it was fab, hte imax at the canyon is the next best thing to the heli ride. also try and past through the red rock of sedona (near the canyon) very pretty little town and fantastic scenery. never been to san fran but would love to go there. disney is brill even for us adults and the LA one is easier to go around as its much smaller than florida.

Having just got back! i have to say your gonna love Vegas. We were there for 2 nights and had a fabby time. Belligios fountains are truley amazing, you lucky things staying there. Gondolas at Venitian are a must. Will let you in to are secret formula for the roulette tables if you want! Depending on how long your there for id also recommend you go see a show.
Asa for the rest of the time there are some lovely hotels on the ocean at Malibu i can recommend, its easy to get to LA from there and car hire is reasonable, if you want to see lots i recommend hiring one. I also loved the night we had in La Jolla(part of San Diego) and wish we could have been there longer.
My full report with photos will be about later today or tommrow although, we dont have any pics of vegas hotels etc as they were just too big to get a good photo of!

Oooh, glad you had a wonderful time Claire!! We went to the Travel Agents at the weekend and mum and dad are planning on booking it in the next few weeks so were getting really excited! Dont know how im going to wait a year!

As for the Bellagio, now they cant decide between that and New York but being as its their Anniversary, we'll go along with whatever - they both look cracking anyway.

We're planning on 6 nights i think - have been looking at Helichopper flights over the Grand Canyon and also at a dinner show for the actual evening of their anniversary.

Am saving like a mad woman already as I really want to go and have a real holiday of a lifetime there.

Ill have to catch you on MSN one day and have a proper catch up about it!!

If your there for 6 nights id recommend more than one show if you can as gambling can get boring unless your winning! If you want a laugh and dont mind taking part yourselves (see photographic evidence later!) i can recommend the dinner show we went to see Ba Da Bing which is at the Stardust. My sister also highly rates "o".

Thanks Claire, Ill definately be nicking you for some ideas. We want to see the Blue Man show and will be heading to the Coyote Ugly bar one night for the fellas. Think mum also wants to see Celine Dion - not because she likes her, just so she can say she saw her in Vegas!!!
