Default Changing name on Passport

Hello

I was going to change my name on my passport ready for use for my honeymoon.

I dont want to surrender my passport yet because I need it to get a visa for where we are travelling to.

Obviously I've never done this before, and Jonathan is soon booking the honeymoon, so I need to know is it worth changing it all around before the wedding, or should I just travel in my maiden name to save all the fuss and confusion (on my part = as always)

Can anyone give me any advice on what they did etc.

Thank you loads.

x

I think I would probably wait and then change everything on your return from your honeymoon. It does seem nicer to be able to change everything before so you can go off on honeymoon officially being a Mrs - but wouldn't you need your marriage certificate in order to change your name anyway? Not too sure about this.

Maybe others who are already married will know.

Nah - you send a form to your registrar confirming your marriage, and send this to the Passport Office with a new application form - you have to enclose a new photo (yippeee - my existing one is horrid) and surrender your old passport.

They then send you a new passport with your new name on etc, but it isn't valid until the day of your wedding.

If I did want to book our honeymoon in my new name - I dont think I could do this until I get my new passport with my new name etc, as I think you need to give a copy of your passport to get a visa?!

Mmmm - Confuzzled again!! hee! hee!

To save a lot of hassle I booked the honeymoon in my maiden name, then did the passport and driving licence change when we got back.

I took the marriage certificate on honeymoon though, showed it at every possible moment and got upgraded where possible I also mentioned to our holiday company it was our honeymoon and they left a bottle of champers in the apartment

I didn't (and still haven't bothered) changing my pasport.
It still has 3 years to run on it & I already think the price of a new one is ridiculous!

I travelled in my maiden name and have just sent it off to get a new one now. It seemed like such a pain in the bum to get it all changed beforehand. It didn't seem to make much difference that I was still travelling in my maiden name. We told the travel agent that it was our honeymoon and then got all the upgrades etc.

You will need to send it off now to get the new passport and then if you need a visa for the place you are going it will go in your new passport. You can't get the visa first as then it will be in your maiden name and you will be travelling in your married name.

I had this problem too so just booked it all in my maiden name and travelled and then got it changed when we got back. It seemed much easier to me.

Similarly to Teresa on this one KM. We went to Cairo for our honeymoon and you need a visa to enter egypt. If I'd changed my passport ahead of time I couldn't have applied for the visa etc cos the new passport wouldn't have been 'active' til my wedding day IYSWIM.

Travelled totally in maiden name but flashed the marriage certificate about and our hotel put the room as Mrs & Mrs Foster anyway which was nice.

Mine expired two weeks before the wedding anyway. I couldn't have timed it better if I tried!

I did the maiden name thing.... infact it's only now over 2 years later that I'm finally getting a "MRS P EILL" passport.... and that's only because we're off to Amsterdam

I travelled in my maiden name too. Felt it was too much hassle otherwise and changed my passport when I got back.

When I got there, I did so wish I could've travelled under my new name.

Ello.. me again.

Right, I've spoken to the agents who we're using to travel with and its going to be okay for me to travel in my new name and less hassle than I thought.

* Send off my form to the registrar to complete & return back to me
* Book holiday in my new name
* When form from registrar comes back to me, enclose it with a new passport application form and piccie etc
* When new passport arrives, apply for a visa - apparantly only takes 5 days at the most

I think when you read all the bumph online etc, it can seem to complicated etc.

Karen put on a date of travel on the passport from and make it a good few weeks before you need it. I sent off for my new passport when we got back from honeymoon at the end of October and I haven't got it yet. I didn't put a date of travel on as I don't need it at the moment but its a good idea if you do as then you should get it in time. I've been waiting for nearly 3 months for mine.

Oh god thanks for that Teresa!

We have our passport application forms here, just got to post that form to the registrar and get it back - which will hopefully be very soon.

Thanks for the tip off though honey. x

NP KM!

When you have filled the applications in (got your pics, your cheque etc) you take the entire unsealed envelope thing to the post office, pay them a fiver and they check you've filled it in right/ticked everything right/signed all relevant bits etc.

Then they send it direct to the Passport office and give you a receipt thing with a date that they guarantee your passport will have arrived by.

I didn't get the post office to check it and just posted it. I have rung them and they have assured me it is being processed and I will get it soon. How soon is the big question though!!!
