Me and Jamie are thinking of going on a self-catering cottage type holiday to Scotland this summer. The problem is, I have only ever been to Edinburgh, so have no idea of the best places to go in Scotland for scenery etc. We are thinking something quiet, but good for getting to other places to sightsee and do touristy stuff etc. Any ideas? Also, any ideas for cheap accommodation? I have ordered Scottish Country Cottages brochure, but the places in there, although lovely, seem a bit pricey to me!
Thanks in advance

Some days it just isnt worth chewing through the leather straps in the morning!
I'm off to Fort William tomorrow for a week as I really like it there, staying in a self-catering cottage that I booked through www.easycottages.co.uk I also used this same company when I went to the Isle of Skye.
The Isle of Arran was nice too, I went there last year but that involves a ferry ride as well.
I've been to a place called Moniaive near Dumfries many times too but that was staying in a hotel.
What sort of activities do you want to do whilst you're there?

I hope that my child, looking back on today
Will remember a mother who had time to play;
Because children grow up while you're not looking,
There are years ahead for cleaning and cooking.
So, quiet now cobwebs go to sleep.
I'm nursing my baby, and babies don't keep.

I'm stopping by The Borders on the way back from Fort William so can let you know what it's like afterwards.

Definitely the west highlands for scenery. Its breathtaking there. If you stay near Fort William you are within easy distance of loads of beautiful places. Visit Eilean Donan Castle if you get a chance its lovely. (I wanted to get married there). Loch Ness is lovely too with Urqhuart Castle on the banks where you can try to spot the monster.
The Isle of Skye is one of my favourite places, I'd highly recomend it if you enjoy walking and wildlife. If you are patient or lucky enough you may well see wild otters playing in the lochs and sea. We have stayed in this cottage twice now its lovely (and its where Neil and I got engaged!!) http://www.cottages4you.co.uk/uce/c4...ropertyTypeId=
If you are after a real get away from it all break then the Ardnamurchan peninsula on the mainland is stunning and very peaceful as is the area around Torridon.
Slightly further south Oban is lovely and you can go across on the ferry to the Isle of Mull and over to Iona to visit the ancient abbey.
God I'm getting all homesick talking about all these places. Can I come with you!!?
Ha ha, of course you can Isla, the more the merrier!!
Well, in terms of activities, lots of walking probably and visiting castles, that sort of thing. I am not hugely into climbing or fishing or golf or anything like that, so lots of gentle stuff with stunning scenery would do me! And the chance to just relax and get away!
I did see a lovely little cottage right on the banks of Loch Ness, but that was nearly £1000 for a week! Outrageous! Will check out the other two links now!
Thanks guys, you are stars as usual!

Oooh, if you go to Fort William in the Summer, you could do the Fort William to Mallaig line on the steam train. I'm going to have to settle for doing it on the normal diesel train but I have no doubts that it will still be absolutely gorgeous.
For those in the know, that stretch of line is the one they use for the Harry Potter movies (Philosophers and Prisoner). Remember the huge, massively high, rail arches in the middle of all this greenery when they're on the Hogwarts Express (or above it in Prisoner)? That's the fella!

We're off back home in the Summer and heading to Loch Lomond this time - theres a post somewhere on here and the link is there for the place we booked.
Easy to get to and within good distance to lots of touristy places.
