Default Zanzibar

Well, I shouldn't be here now as technically we're up to our bleeding necks in work but i've just had a really nice weekend and think I deserve half an hour off so I thought i'd post some piccies from Zanzibar.

I'll do it one at a time so that you get the actual piccie rather than a link.

As you know we went to Zanzibar in March - it's a bit of a journey to get there - overnight flight to Nairobi and then a two hour small plane ride to Zanzibar itself but it was worth it - the place is beautiful.

First picture is of Steve just after we got off the plane in Zanzibar.

Collecting our bags was newexperience. You were asked to point out which one was yours and then a little chap would take it away for a little while before coming into another room to hand it over to you.

No idea what that was all about!

The Zanzibarian's make a huge thing of their Zanzibar Doors.

They were made with the intention of stopping invaders on elephants from storming through them - complete with huge spikes on the front!

The capital city of Zanzibar is Stone Town. We took a trip there - the fish market absolutely wreaked (bearing in mind that the average daily temperature was 37 degrees) but you could stop off for a cooling drink of sugar cane! The guys were standing here just pressing it for the juice.

(not my kind of drink at all!)

Zanzibar is the only place in the world that has indigenous, wild colobus monkeys!

The baby ones were gorgeous!

Wasn't so sure about them when they took a liking to my hair though!

They thought it was hilarious to take it in turns to try and be brave enough to land on my head - until one did!

Needless to say I freaked! No zoom lens required for this little bugger!

They were fab fun though!

P.S You couldn't stand underneath them for too long either as they thought it was a brilliant game to pee on the tourists heads!

Such mild mannered, shy creatures!!!

We went on a spice tour (what with Zanzibar being the spice island and all that) and at the end of it we were asked if we wanted a drink. We all said yes - what we didn't expect was for this complete nutter to shimmy up a 100ft palm tree to get us fresh coconut!

It was very nice though!

They also made us a rather stunning set of hats, with ties for the chaps and a nice palm leaf handbag for the laydees!

Finally, had to show you airport check in Zanzibar style!

No need for a building to walk into, air conditioning - pah!

Nope, just pull up to the kerb, drag your case out of the boot and give it to the lady sitting in the shade just off the street.

She in turn would give you a boarding pass she'd just written out and then you go into the smallest airport ever to wait for the tiny plane!

I hope that my child, looking back on today
Will remember a mother who had time to play;
Because children grow up while you're not looking,
There are years ahead for cleaning and cooking.
So, quiet now cobwebs go to sleep.
I'm nursing my baby, and babies don't keep.
