Question Any suggestions...?

I want to take mum and an 8 month old baby for a 4-5 night break in this country in early October and have no idea really where to go/stay.

We'll probably go by car to within 3 - 4 hours ish from Chester and were contemplating places like Bath, Harrogate, York, Cheltenham, The Lakes. We'd like a hotel with a pool and spa as well as having a decent restaurant and somewhere where we can have nice walks with a pram (possibly somewhere with a prom) and nice little shops. Maybe a tall order but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The Cotswolds is nice and probably just about in your time range.

The Lakes can be very cold and blowy in October, I went for my birthday one year (in a tent) and it snowed!!

I love Bath but is a nightmare driving around as it's all one way streets. Hotels can be a bit on the pricey side.

Why not look at renting a cottage that is near a posh hotel? I use Welcome Cottages, holiday cottage rental in England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and France. or www.chooseacottage.co.uk (I think) You have the option of self-catering, handy for littl'un but can also eat out every meal if you prefer.

We're doing similar (for my birthday again) but coming over your way as we're off to the family cottage at Penmaenmawr with 8-month and big dog in tow. Should be good fun!

I hope that my child, looking back on today
Will remember a mother who had time to play;
Because children grow up while you're not looking,
There are years ahead for cleaning and cooking.
So, quiet now cobwebs go to sleep.
I'm nursing my baby, and babies don't keep.

If you'd be going round about the 12th then avoid York. The 12th and 13th are race days so everywhere will be fully booked and those that do have availability the majority charge a surcharge for race days.

If you're not planning on those dates the only hotel I can think of with a pool that's walking distance from the city centre is The Knavesmire I've never been there but a friend of mine has stayed there and loved it. There are probably more with a pool but that's the only one I know of.

There is a nice Spa hotel towards Leeds way but if you want shops then it means driving to them as there's nothing near the hotel. this is it They do have a hotel in the lakes though which might be nearer shops

The only place that springs to mind is Monkhouse Hill Cottages in Sebergham, near Penrith. They used to be the Groovy Cottages! But they do mid week stays or random number of days, and you get a pass to the North Lakes Spa Hotel with it. Some of the cottages have saunas and things in them. I have stayed there a couple of times.

Not sure about hotels in Leeds but this place is definitely worth a look:
Spa Days - Welcome to Spa Days

Its on Dock Street in Leeds which is a really cool area with lots of nice restaurants and boutiquey shops : )

Hope you have fun wherever you decide!
