Where are you thinking of?

I've never flown with Cal though we're used to doing long car journeys with him.

I'm not sure. I was wondering about the East coast of America, or if anyone's done it successfully, Oz.

i would travel that far if we could have afforded it. Small babies are easy to cart around. Do it now before it becomes much harder. When I think of how we used to just do things on the sopur of the moment when Matthew was a baby, it feels a dream now.

As far as I wanted. They sit on your lap when that tiny, its harder when they are about 18 months as they are bigger and wriggly and yet dont qualify for own seat so you can put them down.

Bottles / dummy for taking off etc as the ears pop, and make sure they are tired so they dont cry the whole journey as the other passengers might get annoyed hehe.

All changing / feeding etc can be done in a small space easily enough too, and even the tiny plane loos have little changing station.

We managed Ireland )45 mins) and Canaries when Annabel was younger, but if we had of had more cash I would have taken her anywhere x

I would say as far as you want to go. I think the trick is more in knowing what's available when you get there. Do your homework on what you'll need to get so you can travel as light as possible and buy what you need when you get there.
For a long flight pre-book your seats and ask for a flight cot so you can put the baby down

I'm all excited now! I thought you'd all tell me not to do it. I am worried about feeling uncomfortable about the baby crying, but what the heck!

Maybe we could do the cancelled trip to Oz that we planned for the Summer just gone. This would give me a few days of skiing, too.

Woohoo! I'm off to look up flights...

If you're going to do it, do it when she is a small baby. We flew to mainland Spain when Grace was 13.5 months old and it put me off travelling with a small child for life! It would have been easier if she couldn't walk/wriggle etc

Be aware that the baby won't have its own travel allowance, so whatever you bring for it will have to fit into your bag. This is especially important considering the current hand luggage regs. If you are formula feeding then you'll probably have to bring that with you, along with bottles and possibly some way of sterilizing them. You'll also need access to clean drinking water and a kettle to make them up.
You may have to bring travel cot and pram etc too.

Honestly, considering how ill I felt for weeks with jet lag after we came home from NZ I really wouldn't go that far, but that's a personal opinion.

My next door neighbours flew with their 8 week old baby to Austrailia & had no problems, then the following year they then then went to Canada with a 16 month (roughly) & another 8 week old!

We went to Tunisia with Jake when he was 2.5 & he was fine!

My friend here took her little girl to Australia when she was about 6 months old to see family, and she said the only thing that she didn't enjoy was the flight........

I ditto Karen regarding the jet lag. When we went to Oz, it was dreadful and took a few days to recover. I could barely look after myself properly let alone a baby, but of course everyone is different.

We went to Spain when Ryan as 10 months old which was 7 hours solid of travelling from leaving our house to getting to the resort. It was much easier than we hoped for.

My cousin came to Oz from UK for a holiday with her 8 mth old and her partner recently. She then went on to spend 2 wks in New Zealand with just her and the baby, and all went really well. Just the heat in Oz worried the baby.

We have just come back from Qld with our 6 mth old. Our trip up entailed a 1 hr drive, two 1.5 hr plane trips with an hour between, then a 2 hr bus ride - and he was fine. Our return journey was even longer as we had a 5.5 hr layover between flights, again, no worries, but we were very prepared.

We took Millie to Boston and San Diego when she was 9 months old to see family. It was actually much better than I was anticipating although she did scream for some of the flights. Her sleep was also disturbed for some of the time, but it wasn't the end of the world. I am glad we went.

Go for it. Nothing ventured and all that!
