What's your favouraite UK city?
I really feel the need for a holiday (especially if our friends go to portugal and we can't afford it) and was wondering about a short break somewhere in the UK as Chris has loads of time off from work coming up and I'm sure I can squeeze a day or two!!
So, I thought I'd ask you guys where's the best City you've been to in the UK?
Any hotel reccommendations or anything?.....
Ta.

I'd say either Glasgow or Bristol. Both have loads of culture and loads of things to do and see! I lived in Glasgow for 4 years as a student and was never bored - I've visited quite a few times since becoming a Responsible Adult and I still love it The Thistle Hotel in the city centre is good - I think its on Renfrew St and can be booked through Lastminute
Bristol is also a fun city - again loads of things to do and see with great countryside around and loads of fab restaurants to pig out in I recommend The Villager Restaurant in Westbury-on-Trym highly! The City Inn is quite a comfortable hotel - very contempoary and the rates are decent.
Oh, I forgot about Bath! Gorgeous, but much more expensive to stay in than Bristol or Glasgow. And it has more culture and restaurants than you could shake a stick at!! We stayed at the Bath Windsor hotel on Great Pultney St. This is one of the newest hotels in Bath and also one of the most expensive. Perfect for a romantic break.
(edited because I forgot to mention hotels!)

I'd say Bath! It's a must, I've still got to take Mark though!
If you went to Bath, you could do a day trip to Bristol too!
And if you go? A trip to Sally Lunn's for the most wonder lunch is a treat not to be missed!!!
Luv Lo xx

I agree with Lo and would have to say Bath too. Some lovely little hotels just outside the main city too.

As a tourist extraordinaire (!), I'd recommend Bath (beautiful, lots to do, romantic and elegant), Edinburgh (loads of fun, great pubs and nice b and b's), and York (great walks, lovely town, shopping fun too).
Can't remember very well where I stayed - Edinburgh at a b and b on Craigmillar Rd. Bath - small private hotel thing just outside town (cheaper). York - some b and b which was lovely!
Enjoy!

I like bath a lot but we're doing a major project there at the moment (redevelopment of the Southgate centre - ugly 1970s bit with BHS in - for 40,000 sqm of new retail floorspace, 100 flats, gym etc etc) so I'm not sure I could walk around happily in a daze ignoring things we're doind, and that bores Chris silly!!

Go for Edinburgh, Roz. Its fantastic and there's loads of things to do there.
Failing that, how about Chester? Not so many miles from you either..

we went to Chester in Feb this year - a birthday / valentines thing. I was wondering about York because I've never been. I did a flying visit to Edinburgh for new year a couple of years ago and would love to go back...I'll just have to see how the pennies are I think!!

Well, I have been to both York and Edinburgh and I loved them both. IN Edinburgh we stayed in a hotel found through www.laterooms.co.uk and in York, we went self-catering.
York is totally fantastic. It is compact enough to be able to walk all round it and there is lots to see and do. It also has some lovely tea rooms and restaurants as well as a castle and medieval stone walls! Soooo romantic.
Edinburgh was also great, but much bigger and with things more spread out. However, high points were the castle and royal mile and eating out in Indigo Yard (v.trendy restaurant).
Both places are great, but Edinburgh was colder! Hehe.
Hope you settle on somewhere eventually. Jamie and I are thinking of taking a week in October and can't decide where to go. If people are recommending Bath, may well give that a try.
Cheers
Jessx

Ooh! Just had another thought. Cambridge. Great shops, nightlife, buildings and then there's the old venetian element of gondaleering. is that a word?
I Lurve it there, but used to live quite close so have forgotten how much I liked it.

No idea if gondaleering is a proper word, but for Cambridge the right word would be "punting" or (probably more accurately) "messing around in boats and falling in"!!

Newcastle Upon Tyne Rocks!
I know it's not the sort of place you think of straight away, but what about Newcastle Upon Tyne.
Absolutely fabulous shopping, a massive beering area called the Big Market, the Quayside which is great for your posher bars.
Brilliant Clubs which are always playing great music.
Great restaurants, lovely hotels (we stayed at Malmaison at the Quayside over New Year).
The Metro Centre is really well thought out and is great for absolutely anything you need.
You're close to Scotland and Hadrian's Wall.
Do you need any more convincing?????

Definately York or Edinburgh for me as well. Good choice Jess!!
I was at uni in York, and have no idea why I left the place. It is so beautiful, and there is so much to see there. Same with Edinburgh. My ex lived there, and I spent every other weekend there and never got tired of the place.
Other fav place is Brighton, just coz it is so much fun!

I say go for York - I love York with the 'old' sections and the ulta modern new bits - and one of the best thing is the nightlife! If you go there, go on one of the 'ghost walks' - wow! I was really scared good job Jon was with me....they are so atmoshpheric and really hammer home what it must have been like in victorian times.
York is also a fab place to go christmas shopping - especially the market and the shambles!
Hope you find somewhere you like...me & Jon went to Brid for a weekend a couple of months ago and it was great just to chill out and walk along the beach barefoot holding hands....aaaaw it was soo romantic. Sorry went off on a slight tangent there, but I love York and that's my recommendation!!

I've got to say Oxford as I grew up in a town not that far away on the edge of the Cotswolds. Very beautiful, steeped in history and also there are some fabulous picturesque villages to wander round that are not far from the city.

P.S Also agree with the others - Bath is wonderful!

My favourite is Canterbury. It's much smaller that every other city I can think of but as I was a student there I love it. If the commute wasn't so bad we'd live there. Lovely old buildings, beautiful Cathedral, and hundreds of pubs and restaurants. The countryside is beautiful too and Whitstable (seaside) is 5 or 6 miles up the road.
Winchester is lovely too, and I like Weymouth and Bath.
For me anywhere north of London after September is too cold
I have been to York, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Liverpool, Sheffield, Nottingham, Newcastle, Harrowgate, Birmingham and Blackpool and frozen my xxxx off!!
I'm a southerner through and through.
