Malaysia/Penang/Langkawi
Well, we were finally caught by the travel agents yesterday and had to pay up the balance of the holiday, so thought I would share with you where we're off to for the first two weeks of December.
Flying out on 1st December to Kuala Lumpur and staying at the Quality City Center Hotel in the centre of KL for 5 nights.

As you can see, the last two hotels are on the beach but the first one's in the actual city centre - not sure if we're going to like it but we'll try anything once.
Wooohooo, not long to go now.
(Why can we never stay in one place on holiday - we must be mad!!!)

Tee hee - hadn't thought of that - 'LANG'kawi - chortle!!!
I'm going to Langkawi for the scuba diving mainly.
If it's any consolation, I would like a conservatory but Steve says we can't have one, therefore we're off on hols!
Will start looking for places with the name bryan in them.
Dreadful day - brain about to fall out of head - understand completely where you're coming from - wibble!

Good grief - how much boredom can one woman take.
Somebody - for the love of God - give me some work!!!!
Will just have to plan what i'm going to do on hols instead.
*Sigh*

Nikki, i've been searching for 'things to do' on Penang and failed.
What did your mum and step-dad go to see?
We couldn't stay on the beach - Steve would die of boredom (hyperactive child! )

Don't want to put a downer on your trip Dawnie, but you should be aware that the Australian govt has issued travel warnings for a number of south east asian countries following the Bali bombings and the Phillipines ones too. Malaysia is one of those countries. I'd advise you to check the Foreign Affairs website of Australia and UK, and also talk to your travel agent.
The advice basically says avoid travel to these areas, in particular avoid spots where tourists are known to congregate.
Just wanted you to be fully informed.

Fi, i'd be really grateful if you could filter any info you get at your end back here.
I phoned the travel agent this morning and so far the Foreign Office isn't cordoning off Malaysia. However, i'm just wondering if it's a matter of time!
Cheers

Dawnie, I've copied the stuff from the DFAT site for you.
Malaysia:This Advice is current for Tuesday 22 October 2002 EST
The Advice was issued on Thursday 17 October 2002 17:04:49 EST
This advice has been reviewed. It contains new information or advice. The warning level has changed.

Australians are advised to exercise caution when travelling to the areas around Semporna and Tawau in the state of Sabah, and the islands off the east coast of Sabah, including Sipadan and Pandanan. Australians in Malaysia should avoid any large public gatherings and keep themselves well informed of developments that may affect their safety.

And here is the UK information from your govt.FOREIGN OFFICE UPDATES ITS TRAVEL ADVICE FOR SOUTH EAST ASIAN COUNTRIES (18/10/02)
Following the terrorist attacks in Bali, Indonesia on 12 October, the Foreign Office updated its travel advice for the following countries in South East Asia: Indonesia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Philippines, Vietnam, Burma, Brunei, Singapore, Malaysia, and East Timor. Travel advice for Indonesia was further updated on 17 October.
Following further consideration and information, the Foreign Office today made the following changes to travel advice:
For Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand and East Timor, the first paragraph in the Terrorism section of the travel advice will read: 'There is an increased threat to British nationals and British interests from terrorism in South East Asia. Following the terrorist attacks in Bali on 12 October in which Western tourists were deliberately targeted, the threat to British nationals in [enter the name of the country] has increased significantly. British nationals should exercise extreme caution in public places, in particular places of entertainment such as nightclubs, bars, restaurants and places of worship known to be frequented by foreigners. All British institutions and businesses should reconsider their security arrangements. British and international schools should be especially vigilant.'
