i can see them under names, but what do they mean and do?

Not stupid at all. They don't do anything really - they are just a guide to how many posts a person has. The more posts you have, the more stars you collect. There not important but some users find them quite fun - and quite embarrasing when they realise how many they have collected!

well, i fiqured it was something like that. but i know on some sites, they will get more faces to use, or there will be like a "sex" section, you can't enter till you post "blank" number of post.
that is why i asked what do they do!!
