After getting so much help from you all so far, I wondered if you could help me with what could be the biggest task so far - a theme. I've had various ideas, but nothing that's grabbed me enough to want to follow it through. I've got loads of time to make whatever theme we choose work... So please help! (I've also realised having a theme will help with with finding everything else... like flowers, invites, etc, etc!)
I'd also love to be able to surprise guests with something a bit different. Want to steer clear of gambling things but like the idea of magicians/caricatures and the like.

Sometimes it's easier to decide ona definite colour scheme than a theme exactly! I really admire people who had proper 'themes' running through their day - it takes so much imagination to keep it up with everything.
With preferences like magicians and caracaturists, you coudl have a theme of 'fun things' throughout the day, or you could have no theme but have those things anyway, just cos you like them!
That didn't help much, did it?

As we got wed in a castle our was medieval, included our invites, place names, menus, my dress, hair do - thats it i think!
We had a magician, he did close up magic while we had our pics taken and then in between courses during the meal. He seemed to go down well, and kept people entertained while photos were being done (which can sometimes be boring for people if they take a while)
Where abouts are you? Can pass detials on if you are in kent.
We're in Coventry - so I don't think the Kent details will help, but thanks anyway. Our venues pretty oldy-worldy, but not quite castle-status so I don't think we could get away with medieval... I suppose it's in between modern and old!
The general colour we're going with is mauve (BMs dresses) - and as that's so hard to come by we thought silver might be nice.
i had a theme of leaves! which i could lie and say was because the leaves were just resprouting on the trees after winter when we got married, but honestly i just liked the 'leaves' design on Microsoft Publisher which i did my invites on. everything just kinda fell in after that...the favours etc
my colours were lilac and ivory with hints of silver and it all worked really well. the colours were light and springy which was good cos we got wed just as spring was starting.

We didn't really have a theme.... but cos Matt wore his uniform I wanted things to tie in with that... his main colour (Beret & stripe on his trousers etc) was Cyprus Green, so we kind of had a "Green & Cream" sort of colour scheme,
Then we added a bit of "Scottish" into it (Matt's from Scotland) I put some Thistles into my Lilies & tied them with a tartan ribbon that matched my page boy's tartan trousers!
Sometimes no "strict theme" is just as good as a specific theme!

I have seen Lavender bags used as favours which is a great idea, or if you’re not having favours then 1 stem of lavender on everyones napkins tied with silver ribbon would look fab & smell great too. You could also follow this though with the addition of a few stems in your bouquet? If you don’t like lavender then leaves as a theme that Vicki used could be used for your colour scheme. You can buy some really lovely skeleton leaves that you could use for invitations and/or place settings.
I think caricatures are fab, they get everyone talking & laughing & it’s something that your guest can take away as a momento of your big day. If you are having a small wedding then it’s okay I reckon, if it’s a large do though then it could be a problem with too many people wanting one! If it is a big do then a magician doing close up magic can entertain many guests at once.
Let us know how you get on.
P.S. We're getting married on Valentines Day so the theme was sort of decided for us. So much stuff is heart related so I'm trying not to be too twee

We had dragonflies for our theme as I think they're so pretty. I made all the invites and place cards myself and my husband had a silk painted waistcoat with dragonflies on.
We had hot pink and purple as our colour scheme and the bright colours looked so nice in the photos.
Some people don't have a theme and I don't think guests really notice if you don't (and sometime don't notice if you do!)
Best of luck choosing and enjoy your planning. As us smug marrieds will tell you you'll miss all the stress and planning when the wedding day is over!

Some days it just isnt worth chewing through the leather straps in the morning!
I love the idea of dragonflies and peacocks! Thank you! We've decided now that we're going to make our own scroll invitations... And if we had went with a theme like that we'd be able to stick dragonflies/peacocks on the top. They'd definitely look different to your typical wedding stationery!
As a general update, we went to the National Wedding Show yesterday... it was fab. Saw loads of dresses to die for, got a few freebees (there was a Martini stand - so I had lots of tastes!) . Saw some wonderful cakes. Some chocolate ones that smelt absolutely fantastic.
We also spent a fortune on silver Top Hat favour boxes for the men and some silver disposable cameras. (They were on special offer!!)
