I've just arranged to go and see a cake person tomorrow - I saw her at the wedding show in Birmingham and the cakes were divine. But I'd like to go armed with some knowledge - like how much is reasonable to pay (I'm sounding very money obsessed at the moment!!)... We want a classic three tier cake I think, the only special request being no peel!
But as a guide, I paid £200 for a 3 tier cake, 12", 10" and 8". The bottom tier was sponge, the middle and top were classic fruit. All were marzipanned and iced, and I had sugar roses for all 3 tiers. I was quoted £375 for exactly the same design/type by a "professional wedding cake baker", and in the end used a small independent bakers in my home town.
HTH,
Lo xx
Here's what my cake was like (sorry, the pic isn't that good)

we're paying about 300 for ours but ours isn't conventional..... it's two tiers of chocolate with marzipan snowman bride and groom on top Nothing conventional about our wedding!! lol
Thanks all - Karen, I can't believe you got such a bargain! And Lo, yours was lovely.
We're back now from the cake visit, and we've been quoted £290 inc delivery, which I don't think is too bad. That's for three tiers - a bottom of fruit, middle of ginger, and top of fruit. With fantastic bubbles. If you're interested you can see it at this site - it's the middle one that will pop up (double click on it and you'll see it better).
That cake is lovely. I've been looking round for a cake and have been quoted anything from £300 to £500 for a 3 tier chocolate cake.
We've found a bargain though. My mum's friend is a cook and is going to make it for us as a wedding present. I think my mum might help as she was going to make it but mentioned it to her friend who said she would do it.
I've found its definately worth asking around though as there are all sorts of people that can do things like this. I've got flowers, the cake and photography all quite cheap or free in the case of the cake this way.

I've asked my aunties to make our cake...they live in Ireland but other family are coming over and they can bring it as hand luggage. If they don't make it then I'm getting down to M&S and buying some and the decorating with flowers I think. The bubble cake is beautiful!
