As you probably know I am getting married in 20 weeks (eek!) and just wanted to know what you thought of having a Pay Bar...Is it such a faux par?? I am having 160 guests (double eek!) and am providing Buck Fizz on the Greeting line and having 40 Bottles of wine (not me personally..but then again.!.) But there after it is a pay bar. Is this usual???
Most weddings I've been to have got a pay bar afterwards.
We will be doing that at my wedding, although I am going to have a tab on the bar for only mine & Jonathans immediate family so that their drinks are on us.
I dont think people expect a free bar Mazz anyway.
Woooo... 20 weeks! Are you nervous?

nobody really expects a free bar Mazz. Never been to a wedding with one and I didn't have one. Karen's idea for a tab for parents and bride and groom's drinks is a good one though.
We're having a pay bar too - I have never been to one where there wasn't. (But maybe I just don't know the right people...must make more rich friends...!)

A freind of mine got married last year and He is from Dublin and loads of his relies came over from Ireland for the reception. The manager of the hotel told him the bar took
£17,000 just from them!!!!! Good job it is pay bar!!! Thanks guys!
I have never been to wedding either where there was a free bar all night.
We didn't even supply an arrival drink cause there were 230 in the evening and we just couldn't afford to.
We over ordered wine for the breakfast & just poured the rest of that into glasses for the guests who arived early. It really stressed me out that we would look really mean but no-one cared & everyone got p*ssed! As 95% of the guests were London based it only cost them the price of a travel card to attend anyway

Yup, I agree, it's rare to get a free bar these days..... a friend of mine got wed and her dad put £500 behind the bar and we were so impressed with the couple of 'free' drinks we got, we did the same - but after that, people paid!

ive also never been to a wedding with a free bar, and didnt have one at ours either, we just had the bucks fizz on entry to the reception, a couple of red & white wine bottles on each table(which we didnt pay for as the venue messed up slightly,we didnt order wine for the tables and when we arrived there was 4 bottles on each table ! so they didnt charge us as we never requested it ! saved me £450 ) & 1 glass of bubbly for everyone for the toasts.
so i wouldnt worry im sure no one will be expecting it.
love

Every wedding I've been to had a pay bar and I wouldn't expect any different. In all honesty if it was a free bar I'd be a bit reluctant to go daft with the drinks. Whenever I'm out if someone offers me a drink I always go for the cheaper option of half a lager even though I'll probably be on vodka when I'm paying. To me a free bar would make me a bit reluctant to drink as much as what I enjoy and more likely to just have a couple of something I'm not fussed about quite simply because it's the cheaper option and I wouldn't want to appear greedy.
I've only ever been to one wedding with a free bar. We are doing the same and having a pay bar in the evening. We are prividing a drinks package for the reception meal which is I think, one glass of something on arrival, half a bottle of wine and sparkling stuff for the toast. If they want anything else then they have to pay. In the evening its going to be a pay bar although we might put a bit behind the bar for close family. Any drinks me and Paul have can be put on a tab and we can pay for it in the morning so we might do it that way.
Don't worry about it, I think its the norm to have a pay bar and no one expects to get free drinks all day.

(The other concern with a free bar is that some people get a drink, put it down, forget where it was and get another one so a lot gets wasted - well that's what my alchie work colleagues tell me!)
A word of warning about having a tab for the bride and groom. Make sure the bar staff are fully aware that they only put drinks on that tab that are actually ordered by the bride and groom and not from people saying the bride or groom have asked them to get them a drink and put it on the tab.
I have heard before about the bride and groom getting a big bar bill for drinks they didn't even see!
Good thought Ang, though I hope that nobody I know would pull a fast one like that tho' you never know do you? Thanks to everyone for your reasuring comments..Thought I was being tight, but now know that it is normal these days esp. with 160 guests
