Default Notice to Marry

Just out of curiosity, can you only give your notice to marry 1 year before you intend to have the wedding?

We had planned on a church before and you could book that whenever so not sure on Civil rules.

Ta muchly

Yes, civil marriage is 1 year or less before the intended date of marriage.

Right, I take it theres no chance of having booked the venue because its popular and gets booked up, that you go to give your notice to marry 1 year before and there be no registrars available!?

I guess youd just have to be there on the date 1 year before to make sure.....

What we did was just went ahead and booked the venue we wanted, then got in touch with the registrar. For a deposit of £25 pounds we were able to secure a registrar for our wedding even though it was still about 14 months away. We haven't given notice yet but at least we know there will be someone available to marry us. This was in Scotland though so rules may be different elsewhere in the UK.

i think your best bet would be to phone the local registrar and ask what you should do. We found ours to be very helpful and they sent out a wedding pack with information and suggested reading etc.

I think you can book the venue well in advance and then a year before the day book the registrar. Beacuse they can only be booked a max of a year in advance there should be no danger at all of them been fully booked. I've known of a few people do this and not one of them have been unlucky enough to not get a registrar.

We booked the venue before the registrar. We tried earlier but they just told us to go away and come back later!!!!
I was worried becuase it was Feb 14th but there was no trouble at all

We werent able to secure a registrar either, we were also told to go away in short jerky movements ...

I think there are plenty of registrars to go around, as long as you ring them as soon as possible once it hits the 12 month mark.

We booked Lumley Castle assuming we could have a registrar straight away. So were disappointed when we heard otherwise. But all is well and we have a registrar to marry us! x

I think we phoned our registrar when we booked our venue and they pencilled us in, so to speak, but we didn't give notice until 1 year before. Don't forget that if you are marrying somewhere that isn't your local area, you have to give notice where you live, and book the registrar for the area you are getting married in.

Jess, we live in Ashford so if we decided to get married in say, Ascot, we would have to give notice in Ashford but book the registrar through Windsor and Maidenhead as its them that cover Ascot?

So who is Ashford would we have to give notice to?

This is confuzling! Should have stuck with the church idea!

Sorry for the questions hun, I just didnt realise that bit!

If you are having a civil ceremony you have to give notice of your intentions to marry. It's a legal requirement over here.

Basicially its a rip off - £60 between you (We had to pay this twice, ONLY for changing our wedding location! Grrrrrrrrr!!)

Both of you have to visit your local registrar in person, and give them a load of details about yourselves and your wedding.

Paula... The above link might answer some questions you might have too maybe?!? Its helpful anyway.

Paula.

I booked Lumley Castle.

THEN, we went to Middlesbrough registrars to give our notice. They then told us who our district registrar was for Lumley Castle.

Middlesbrough Registrars contacted (in our case) Stanley Registrars for us (they faxed over our Intentions to Stanley) and then Stanley Registrars sent us a Welcome pack about civil ceremonies which also confirmed our wedding details.

We will then speak to Stanley Registrars about a week before our wedding to finalise.

Hope that helps with your question to Jess.

(PS Once you go to your local registrars i.e where you live - they will then help you through with the rest.. honestly!)

Yes, Karen is right. However, if you wanted to be extra sure of getting a registrar for the date you intend to marry on, it might be worth contacting the registrar for the area in which you want to marry as soon as you have booked a venue, just to see if they will pencil you in, so to speak!

Otherwise, your local registrar will take care of informing your marriage registrar! Phew, it is rather complex isn't it??

Paula

When you go to your local registrars, they will give you details of the one which covers your wedding venue.. as particular registrars can cover a large area etc.

I am getting married in Durham, but the registrar conducting my wedding is from another town.

Sorry KM, didnt phrase that very well!! What I meant is as we have to give notice where we live, well, there isnt a registrar in our town.

I know where we need to go for the venue we like so thats not a problem.

I just wondered seen as there isnt one in Ashford, would we just to go Weybridge as thats the nearest one to us?

Really sorry......
