Default DJ crisis

After about 6 months of looking for the perfect band for the wedding, we've had to concede defeat. They don't exist, or if they do we can't afford them! Actually the numbers are looking fairly cr*p generally at the moment (why o why did I pick that mega expensive phortographer???). Anyway, the upshot is we are now looking for a good DJ in a hurry - 5 months to go!

We want someone who will play rock and indie tunes that will get people up and dancing, with a few funk and soul grooves thrown in. No cheese, no pop, no pop idol/fame academy winners/losers, no slow songs. In fact, I have a list as long as my arm of things they definitely can't play!!

Any ideas????

Also how much are you/did you pay for a DJ?

We used a dj that was recommended by our venue. Might be worth having a chat with your venue and seeing what they say. We met with the dj about a month before the wedding to discuss the type of music that we wanted.

There should be a load in the yellow pages so that be worth a look. Also if you've been to any weddings or parties where you like the dj, it might be worth contacting them.

We paid £150 for our DJ and that was in October 04 and the wedding was in Sussex. I don't expect they would vary too much.

Default dj

hi! we also have booked the d.j from our venue, as he has done loads of weddings there and knows pretty much what will get people up dancing! you could also make a CD with all your faves on, im sure the dj would play whatever you ask him too!

Asking the venue as the others have said is a good idea. If not, try looking in some of the wedding magazines - they always have people advertising in there.

We are having a band and we found finding the right band more difficult than anything else. I hope you find someone suitable.

That was the exact spec we had!!!

Our DJ was worth his weight in gold he was that good :-) Pricey though @ £400 but worth EVERY penny. He also said it was the best wedding he'd ever done I can't off the top of my head remember the flippin company name though will have a look today...

If you could find out that would be fab Kezzer! We had originally budgeted for a band, so that would be an okay price if he's worth it.

Unfortunately my venue is just an empty room that we're hiring, and bringing in our own caterers etc. They're not overly helpful as they don't actually book any other suppliers themselves, so can't ask there.

Found it! http://www.discotheques.co.uk/index.html
We specifically requested Carl Knight based on his biog.
He specialises in funk/soul (especially of the 80's kind) but we gave him a list of popular indie stuff (like Stone Rose, Primal Scream, Charlatans e.t.c.) and surprisingly he worked it all together really well! We just said no chart, no gimmicks & definitely no requests, although this did upset my mother in law as he refused to play Abbas Dancing Queen for her

Excellent, thanks! This sounds great. I'll check it out. I am definitely doing a no request thing too...someone in my family WILL ask for The Birdie Song.

Hi Liz,

My MIL runs a DJ agency, Mark's step dad is one of the main DJ's but she has plenty of other's on the books to suit what you are looking for. If you want their details drop me a PM, and as we're only down the road it's not too far for them to travel either, which will keep the price down!

Let me know,
Lo xxx
