Default Engagement announcements???

Did all of you go out and buy engagement announcements and send them out?? I/we were thinking of doing this because we won't be inviting everyone that we know to the wedding. At least, this way, everyone will know we're engaged. Then we plan on sending out little announcements with a wedding photo, saying we got married. I doubt we'll get many 'wedding gifts' being that I only want 25 people, max, at our ceremony. We're already in our own place, but we could use some silver, dishes, glasses, stuff like that. If we send out wedding announcements, is it typical to get gifts?? This is not why I'm sending them out, just curious as to what the norm is. And not to mention I have a different mailing address than living address.

Thanks in advance!

I think engagement announcements is a lovely idea, and perhaps if you can afford it you could throw a party and everyone could come to that rather than the full wedding?

I think if you send wedding cards afterwards it would be a bit unfair to expect presents from guests who weren't invited. (not saying you do expect)I'm not sure however how it works in the US. I think some of my aunts and uncles who live in US, Ireland and Oz that can't make it to the wedding might still send a small gift to us, but I doubt it very much, prolly just a card.
