Default Vicar said no to three readings - eek!

The Vicar has just said that he thinks three readings is too much for people to listen to at a wedding, and can we choose betwen our two secular readings and only have one of them. Eeekk!! Really don't know what to do as we've already asked our readers and it's so awkward.

We were going to have:
Desiderata by Max Ehrmann, read by my mum
If by Rudyard Kipling, read by Stephen's dad
Song of Solomon 8. 6-7, read by my step-dad

The bible verse has a special meaning to my step-dad, and I really want to include him. My mum loves desiderata, and If is a poem from a father to a son, so it has to be read by Stephen's dad!! No idea what to do!! Help!!!

We were only allowed to have 2 readings as well. Perhaps you could have one at the reception.

Snap Teresa!

What about Stephen's dad doing this at the reception. He'll then get a really nice part in your day.

Could be a possibility...but would it make the ceremony seem "all about me"? I supose my mum could read Desiderata at the reception...will think on it, thanks!!

I'm gutted as we cleared it with the Parish Administrator on Friday, and then I asked my step-dad. If only I'd known beofre I could have just dropped one of the readings without having to drop a reader. Grr.

Im sure if you explained that you arent choosing not to have one but have been told that you can only have the 2 they will understand.

I do like the idea of having one read at the speeches though - very nice!

Oh I'd be so cross about that I really would. HE thinks three readings will be too much - errrrm isn't the service the most important part of the day? I personally wouldn't find listening to three readings too much at all and I'd be tempted to speak to him again and stress how important the service is to you both and how important it is that you have these readings. Failing that like Teresa suggested have one at the reception.

We opted only to have one reading during our ceremony and another during the speeches - it worked out really well. Good luck!

Won't the Vicar let you have it at a later stage of the ceremony? Say as a reflection before the dismissal ?

It's all sorted! I emailed the Vicar and said that we had hoped to involve three people in the ceremony for personal family reasons, but that we'd have a think about which reading we could drop. He came back and said not to worry - he was just thinking about our guests, but it wasn't worth upsetting people over. So, three readings are back on! I am a bit worried as he's the expert, but the readings we've chosen are nice and a bit different (and not hugely lengthy), so I don't think people will get too agitated?? And the ceremony is the most important bit of the day. O well, this is one of those "it's your day have it your way" occassions I think.

I hope that my child, looking back on today
Will remember a mother who had time to play;

There are years ahead for cleaning and cooking.
So, quiet now cobwebs go to sleep.
I'm nursing my baby, and babies don't keep.

Bugger it Liz! The day goes so incredibly quickly that an extra 5 minute reading really isn't going to hurt!

Not long now!
