Default Can I pick your brains about buffet food?

For our evening reception, we (with lots of help from my mum/aunties etc) are going to do our own finger buffet.
I just really want to pick your brains as to the kind of food or any ideas re, the presentation or anything really. What would you like to see on a good buffet? Other than the usual, sandwiches, sausage rolls, samosas, pasta` salad, quiche etc, I can't think of much else.
I did read about a couple who had a different table for food from certain countries....
Any tips, suggestions, advice would be ever so welcome.
Thank you.
Rachel

How about things like a cheese board with different types of bread and crackers.

Other ideas:
Salads
Cold meat eg ham, turkey
Bread sticks / cheese straw things
Carrot, celery etc with different dips
Bowls of crisps, tortilla chips
Mini kebabs/chicken satay type things
Quiches or pizza type things
Coronation chicken

Its probably worth having a look in the supermarkets or Marks and Spencer as they do lots of buffet type food.

We put bowls of sweets like maltesers and smarties on our tables too in the evening which seemed to go down really well.

I'm gonna sound like a right cheapo now - but Iceland do a good range of party food, often at 3 for £5 sort of thing.
They have satay kebabs, mini pizzas, bruschetta, indian selections, duck spring rolls, sausages, sauasage rolls, and sweets- like mini profiteroles/eclairs, mini pavlovas etc etc

Worth a look if nowt else

Hi rach!

Me and Tony decided to do our own evening buffet (with a bit of help from my mum and a family friend) as we couldnt justify paying thousands fro someone else to do it. And we saved a heap of money! Im so glad we did it. I probably wont be able to remember everything but here is a list of what we had.

Selection of bread rolls (soft, crusty, granary, poppy seed, etc.)
Meat platter (cold cuts of beef, turkey and ham)
Cheese platter (cheddar, strawberry stilton, brie, smoked cheese, etc.)
Tikka satay sticks
Filo king prawns
Mini cornish pasties
Cheese and tomato brushcetta
Mini pizzas
Mini quiches
Vegetable samosas
Onion bahjis
Mini spring rolls
Mini duck rolls
Large bowls of pasta salad
Large salad platter
Cocktail sausages
Mini pork pies
Tortilla chips
Chicken goujons
Large platter of cakes (flapjack, choc brownies, doughnuts, and iced buns)
Large fruit platter (strawberries, grapes, cherries, pineapple, kiwi and melon)

Plus: Wide selection of dips, dressings, pickle, mustard, butter, mayo, etc.

We got all the party food from Asda and we ordered the bread from a really nice bakery and the meat from a great butchers.

We also bought FAR too much, we had loads left over. And to think we only spent about £180 on the whole lot!!!

Hope this helps!

Dont think I can add anything more to the lists provided, good idea doing your own food though - it will save you a fortune.

Ooh , thanks everyone. That's given me loads of ideas.
Kay, your list sounds lush. In fact, I'm going to print it off!
Thanks again.

I always do swedish meatbals for my eurovision evenings and they go down a treat. They are cheap, and couldn't be easier, i just sling them in the oven and pop them in a bowl with some cocktail sticks and a few dips. I lurve coctail sausages as well.
