for getting married!
For a civil ceremony in England you have to give notice that you're getting married and it gets stuck up on a wall and people can say "hang on, I married her last week" if they want to.

Roz - I need all the details when you get back please! We're panicking about this because Mark has no way of proving his address when we get into the country (although I have been told off the record by another registrar that this is not something that they can demand anyway). I called Lambeth registry office yesterday to make our appointment and they were so miserable - I'm dreading going to see them. They are notoriously difficult, and I know that the whole day is going to be one mega stress.

Bev, you'll be fine.
I expect Manchester has similar issues to london with people registering fairly swiftly after arriving in the country so I'll see if I can do any prodding!!

We're done with it...
We went to the registrar office...
And did our declarations, separately, I went first...
And it was too funny as I forgot one of the middle names of Goth Groom ) LOL...
I don't remember to have had to produce a proof of residency though.
Then we had to go back after yes that must be it approximately 2 weeks, to pick up the papers to hand to the registrar ( for him or her to get us the certificates...)
smiles, smiles, smiles...miles of smiles...
It's a doodle, nice to go and celebrate with a glass of wine afterward though, and enjoy the balm in your heart
X

You're right Stack, we don't do that in Scotland -we have to go to the registrar in the district in which you are being married up to 3 months but no less than 2 weeks before your wedding to give "notice" of our intention to marry - you give 2 forms (one for each of the bride and groom) along with your original birth certs and the names and addresses of your witnesses - then the bride or the groom MUST go to collect the marriage schedule which the minister will sign on the day (or if it's a registry office wedding, the registrar will sign it and may actually keep it for you and bring it to the ceremony). Then you have to get the signed schedule back to the registrar within 3 days of the wedding to have your marriage officially registered and get your marriage certificate created................v. boring but really exciting!!!!!!!!!

Not sure how different it is in Northern Ireland. David has to come here from Australia, and be resident in the district for 15 days before we serve notice - we've been advised to bring his plane ticket, passport, and a letter from the owner of the house he'll be staying in to vouch that he's been there.
After 15 days we serve notice - that takes 7 days, and then the licence is issued. We can then get married!
This is all for a church wedding too!! And it better be right - every time I phoned the registrar in my district I got a different story, until I got fed up & rang the Chief Registrar. If they mess up our wedding I'll be giving some people a good slap!

Mark has to be here for 7 days, but the bit about the letter is very useful - my Dad has said he will write a letter and come down to the registry office with us. I'm concerned that my parents don't own their house, its a council flat, but we've been there for 25 years so I can't see that it would make a difference. However anything is possible in Lambeth.

Bev - it shouldn't matter - it's only to prove residency in the district for that period, not house ownership.

I was terrified when we went to register.
Matt went in first and did his bit then I was called in. I tell you the waiting bit felt like I was outside a headmasters office.
Went in and did my bit then he called matt in and told us that the notice would be put up and we can collect the license in two weeks.
When I collected the licenses I realised that matt had told the man that I was 21. So on his license I am 21 and on mine I am my proper age 22!!!!! The worst thing about these licenses is the word spinster, it sounds so horrible.
anyway good luck it will be fine

bev - don't know if this'll work, but have a look at the lambeth website www.lambeth.gov.uk
There's no mention of proof of address on there at all!
Chris had to go first because he was parked on a meter, and he got the time of the wedding wrong, which is a bit fundamental I thought!
All OK though, now I just need to organise myself for my passport changing thing!
.................................................. ..........................
no, won't work, but if you search for "registrar" it takes you to their page...

Wow!
I really feel for anyone that has to go thru this rigmarol (sp?)
It must be sooo stressful for you - on top of everything else you have to worry about... Bless you!
