Al's mum is lovely, very mum-sy which I'm not used to, but I find it very sweet.
I suspected she must be feeling quite left out of all the wedding planning malarky (not knowing that this is my third time!) and I know she wants to help and be involved.
Although she does have a daughter, I can't see Helen ever getting married as she doesn't agree with or understand the concept of marriage. Even if she did, I can't see her going for the whole 'romance' and 'ceremony' of a wedding. I can just imagine her turning round one day saying that she'd just got married somewhere, or going off to Vegas or abroad or something to do it.
So... when Al's folks popped over today with the hen weekend deposit I decided to show her the stuff for the tables decs, the favours, the mens ties and the stationery etc describing our ideas. She really liked it all and offered to help in any way she could, bless her, plus I know she'd really enjoy it.
Then, I thought, 'sod it' and showed her my tiara and she loved it. On the spur of the moment, I made a decision, and went on to tell her that I'd ordered my wedding outfit from a dressmaker in Liverpool... and here comes the biggie... I invited her to come to my fitting with me in January seeing as my mum won't be there. She was really touched and her eyes went all glazed over
I then carried on with 'the tour' and told her how I'd been scouring the net for a guest book and had finally found one. I told her the story of how it was only available in the US and that a friend on here was helping me out. She was clearly in full wedding mode by now because when the picture of the guest book finally loaded she said "oh that's just perfect, it ties in brilliantly".
So there we go, how to endear yourself to the future mother-in-law and it made me feel good too. And Al's happy because I'm making the effort with his mum so it's smiles all round
