Shocked at the price of Wedding cakes...
I don't know about the rest of you but i am astonished at the price you have to pay for a wedding cake these days. I want a nice chocolate cake, not too big ( only inviting 30ish guests) and i fancy a celtic theme and maybe a thistle on top.
I was hoping to get the cake form M&S but have since noticed another thread saying that they don't do a choccy one anymore
Back to the drawing board

I agree, it's daylight robbery!
It was so way down on our list of priorities when planning our wedding that we said we wasn't going to bother having one.
In the end hubbys auntie offered to make us one for a present so it was free
Do you have any friends or family that would like to make it? Or maybe check out some local bakers to see if they can do you want you want for a cheaper price than the fancy wedding cake people?
Or someone mentioned Watirose not so long ago, they do two 3 tier wedding cakes for £165 - Do search for chocolate wedding... http://www.waitrosedeliver.com/wdeli...sp?siteCode=BI
They come decorated but you could easily take the stuff off & re-decorate with your own colour scheme I reckon.

Thanks for that.... I am thinking of just being cheap and getting a plain and traditional white iced fruit cake form M&S as it will be a lot cheaper than a chocolate one and to be honest i probably wont be eating any which ever one i go for.
Those cakes in Waitrose to look quite tempting though.

Hi,
I totally agree, we are going for the 3 teared fruit cake from M&S, I sam one at a wedding fair this weekend almost identical and they were advertising it as the cheep option at £280. Rip off.
Have you seen the fancy chocholate cakes that M&S do??? I went on Saturday with the MIL2b and they look lovley. Try the website for normal/fancey cakes. They have a connoisseur chocolate rose cake its round flavoured with Grand Marnier and decorated in very fancy roses its £40 and says 20 portions, or for £28 serving 20 they do a square chocolate cake with red roses or yellow roses.
Both look lovley.

I have been having a few probs accessing the M&S food section of their site recently so i might take a trip down to the local branch at the weekend to check it out. Thanks for the tip.... silly me hadn't thought of getting a non-wedding cake!

I can heartily recommend the woman who did our cake - it may be worth your while driving to Huddersfield a couple of times...
We had 3 iced layers - fruit, chocolate and carrot - as well as a plain iced fruit cake hidden in the kitchen for cutting. Altogether - including hire of cake stand - that came to £90...
Have a look at our wedding pics for a pic of the cake.

A bargain!
Trouble is i was sort of hoping to get the cake somewhere local to the wedding as i am being awkward and getting married in Scotland as other half is Scottish.
Has anyone tried to transport a cake on a plane? is it possible? i guess we could change our plans and drive up but i would still worry the cake would get spoilt on the journey as it is a good 4-5 hours from here.

I totally understand your Dilema we are getting married in Scotland too and my biggest concern is the Cake and transporting it up without it getting wrecked.
Andy's parents at present are getting there neighbour to make the cake but im so worried about it getting spoilt on way up I had considered ordering it from waitross or M&S but get them to delivery to the castle we are getting married at so if they ruin it i can get compentastion lol.
Not looked into if they will deliver to the venue but cant see why they wouldnt im getting Thortons to deliver the Favours we are having we are also getting the Mums flowers and chocolates from thorntons.
So gutted Thorntons don't do wedding cakes lol maybe if I get up a petition they will start doing them by next June lol

The Marks and sparks fruit cake is really yummy and moist. I don't normally like fruit cakes but we had an M&S one at our wedding and it went down a treat. We took home very few leftovers and they were eaten up within days! To be honest it was the chocolate one that wasn't so popular.

LOL
where in Scotland are you getting married...I'm a proffesional cake decorator, and live in Edinburgh.
unfortunatly there's a HUGE difference between chocolate (which is sometimes cocoa powder added to the sponge mix, and real belgian chocolate which is really rich and sometimes quite expensive.....(note I said sometimes).it all depends on size, amount of guests etc.....gimmie a shout in the future, and I could quote you some prices (if that's allowed)
I'm not trying to advertise, and if I'm in the wrong, please say so,
apologies in advance lol

Just as a footnote, I looked through our wedding folder last night and came across the receipt for our wedding cake.
Bearing in mind ours was over £400.00 in 2001 I dread to think what they cost now!

Twas just a fruit jobbie but - as she does - Steve's mum knew a lady who is apparently reputed throughout the UK for the fine cakes she produces and as Steve's mum didn't have a lot of input int our wedding we decided to bite the bullet and go with her recommendation.
In truth, it was a fantastic cake. Not the best picture but if you can imagine it, all the flowers on the top and all the viney bits are all made out of sugar icing and looks like it must have taken yonks. She apparently makes all of that too.
Third thing to bear in mind is that it was practically half the size of me in height so it was a very BIG cake!

A woman in our village loves doing cakes and I got my cake off her last time. It was a 3 tier fruit, iced and had flower sprays on each tier and only cost £110. That was in 2000 and her prices haven't gone up much since.
