Default Make up Trials

Hi girls, I'm new here and wondered if any of you have had any disastrous make up trials? I had one last week at a beauty counter and it was terrible. Thinking of booking a make up person now but how do you know if they're any good or not? I don't want to keep paying for trials if I'm going to end up disappointed all the time. Any suggestions? Thanks girls.

Have you been to any weddings local to you in the last year or so? Did any of the brides have their make up done professionally, maybe you could ask them who they used?

I got mine from a small wedding show in the hotel we were due to have the reception in.

to Groovy btw!

I had a hair and make-up trial recently, which in fairness, had a good outcome as I looked ok but I just wasnt happy with it for some reason. You know when you get that feeling and no amount of telling yourself otherwise will make it go away.

I am now asking around and talking to a lot of people in the hope that I find someone good - i actually have found someone I like the look of but am a bit nervous about it all incase its another waste of money!

Good luck with it all and to Groovy!!

I had a hair trial and it was great, exactly what I asked for and looked really nice. I'm just a bit nervous about the make up though.

Have you had another trial or booked one, or are you having lots of trials with lots of different people? That gets expensive though doesn't it?

Thanks for your help.

I had mine done at a local beauty salon and it was excellent.

As a shameless plug, a friend of mine is setting up as a make up artist and is starting to offer wedding make overs. She's based on the Warwickshire/West Mids border - if local brides are interested please PM me.

xx

I only had one trial and the lady was lovely so I booked her for the wedding. I did find quite a few local salons though that I was ready to try in case it didn't work out. Quite a few salons and hairdressers offer wedding packages, at least they do round here.

Last time I had a disastrous trial with the beautician that actually did my make up on the day. She insisted on using their make up which was completely wrong for me and she was under the illusion that lilac b/maids meant lilac eyeshadow so that I'd match I went downstairs to the hairdresser after the trial for my hair and we just looked at each other in the mirror shaking our heads. By the time I was walking home the foundation was sliding and I looked like I'd dipped my face in a chip pan it was so shiny. A friend stopped and asked me was I ill as I looked shocking.

I gave the girl another chance but told her I'd fetch my own make up as hers was just no good and I'd tell her what colours to use. She was insistent that the stuff she'd used was good and she'd "opened a new bottle of foundation" but if the stuff isn't right for someone's skin it doesn't matter how good or new it is. The second trial with my own make up looked lovely so it wasn't that she couldn't do it but more a case of the stuff she used wasn't suitable for me and she was a bit out there with the eyeshadow colour.

I also went to Estee Lauder for their bridal package they do which is three consultations one for skin care, one for make up and one for sun and body care. The woman I saw was pretty flexible and after telling her I was happy with my existing skin care and sun care she let me have all three as make up consultations. She just tried lots of different looks gave me some good ideas and I got lots of freebies. It's free (some counters try to charge but the bridal package is free no matter what they try and tell you otherwise) but they do like you to buy something if you're happy. As I get my foundation off them anyway it was no hardship to buy that.

My friend went to Body Shop for a make up trial and came out orange! She was mortified, I thought it was quite funny!

Ive just found a lady locally who charges £40 for a trial and £40 for the day. Is this about right?

I think that's about right from what I've read but to me that's dear. For £40 in this village you'd get both the trial and the actual day for that. I only paid £15 for mine all in last time and it was only six years ago.

i went into a boots with a no 7 counter and asked her to do mine. all the way through she was asking my opinion so that if it looked silly she would have changed it. at the end i looked wonderful and she wrote down everything she used and how she put it on, so i could do it myself and practice, and by following her directions i can get it the same so on the day i can do it myself with professional results. therefore i dont need to spend any money on getting someone to come out

What about having a makeup trial whenever you're going out for a special occasion like a special dinner.

Hopefully you'll find the right person fairly quickly and will look brilliant for your nights out?

Oh, and

I found a beautician who works from home. I had 2 trials which cost £16.50 in total, and the cost for the day was about £12. This included her coming to the house. We've since become really good friends and I went to her wedding last year!

She wanted me to look very natural, but I was convinced I wanted eyeliner cos I like to wear it if I am made up. She persuaded me not to and I did um and ahh over whether I was happy. But she was definitely right, I felt great on the day and absolutely love the effect in the photos. I think that if you shop around for one that is either totally mobile or works from home then you may get a much cheaper price like I did. Have you tried looking in yell.com?
