Talking Hair & Make up - how much would you pay?

Hi groovers,

Wondered if you would help me. I have a friend that is a hairdresser and one that is a beauty therapist. They are thinking of teaming together to do a wedding package, and wondered what kind of price you would think is reasonable for your hair and make up trial and also for them to come to your house to do it on the day.

At the moment they charge approx:
Make up trial £16 in total for two, and approx £15 on the day - make up supplied by therapist
Hair - approx £10 for bride or bridesmaid (£10 for trial and £10 on the day).

I think that they really under charge, but they are concerned to put the price up too much as they don't want to rip people off.

Any advice greatly appreciated - then I can print the information off for them!

Thanksxxx

That's massively low compared to other people. To be honest I might be put off because the price is so low (suspicious mind, I tend to wonder what's wrong with something if it appears abnormally low priced)

Their prices are excellent - compared to most places that do wedding they are dirt cheap and compared to the reasonably priced ones I'd say they're selling themselves a bit short.

It depends on what other local places are charging I suppose. Last time I got married it cost me nothing for hair as my hairdresser did me and the b/maids as a wedding present but if I'd had to pay it would have been £15 for me on the day. My make up on the day was £15 including a trial and any other trials were an extra fiver. This was six year ago and they haven't upped their prices too much but then we're only a village with lots of competition - small village but eight salons so they need to be cheap.

At the end of the day wedding hair is only really an updo which most salons don't charge anymore than £20 for so why the word wedding should double and triple that price I don't know.

I think the make up price is about right - that comes to £31 in total so not bad at all and competitive from what I've heard of prices today. The hairdresser I think should maybe raise her prices a little. Maybe make it £15 rather than £10. They could do a joint package for £60 between them that doesn't sound nasty tacky cheap but at the same time sounds really competitive for all they'd be offering. I'd include travel to the bride in that within a certain distance and then charge so much per mile out of that area.

That seems really low compared to some of the quotes I got. They could double those prices and would still be a lot cheaper than a lot of them.

They should probably have a good look and see what other local people charge and price competitively compared to those.

Perhaps they could start of cheaper to build up a reputation and get some photos of the work they have done and then perhaps raise the prices slightly.

Personally, I think they are undercharging to an amazing extent!!

I know they are trying to be cheap to get customers and im sure they provide a great service but they also have to make a profit and, in fairness, they could raise those rates considerably and still be well clear of the opposition.

I have had one trial already which I paid £110 for 2 make up and two hair and it would have been another £240 on the day. It didnt go as planned though and I now have another one booked for next month.

These ladies are offering me this completely free of charge and charging £22 for mums make-up trial which I also think is mad! Ill be leaving them a nice tip if they are good.

So really, what I suppose Im saying is that if they do their research into what the other local people charge, undercut that by a bit and im sure they'll do great!

Good luck to them

I think that's the key thing. See I think they're undercharging themselves but not massively cos I can only go on prices round here whereas Paula thinks they're massively undercharging cos she lives in London where prices are so much higher. It all depends on the area and what other people charge. It amazes me how prices for the same thing can vary so much around the country.

Funny you should say that, my hairdresser spoke to a prospective customer the other day and thinks this is exactly what happened!

My sister has booked me into the place where she works, which is quite posh and expensive. For £250 I get hair and makeup trial, and hair & makeup on the day. It may be less as I have short hair, not long hair which will take ages to put up.

In Cambridge (where I believe they'll start charging us for breathing next, nothing is cheap here!) but getting married in Hungerford where there doesn't seem to be a lot of choice and consequently prices seem pretty high too.
