Exclamation HELP!!! Reception Venues and 1 Confused Bride

Hi all this is my first post as i have only got my ass into gear and decided to start organising our wedding. I am going for my second reception viewing next sunday at the Slieve Doanrd hotel in Newcastle and i really dont know what im supposed to ask? We went today for our first but most of the information i wanted was on the hotels website but there were LOTS of awkward silences. I just don't know what im supposed to be asking or looking for. I know that sounds completely silly cuz i should know what im looking for but im so confused. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi Samantha,

to Groovy.

What sort of reception do you actually want? Formal, slightly informal, etc?
It's been years since I was in the Slieve Donard, so I don't know how it's set up for weddings etc.

Do you want a formal top table, or something more intimate? Do they permit you to bring your own alcohol in, and charge you corkage? Do they have some sort of event co-ordinator who will be in charge on the day?

Do they have more than one room for the reception - and if so which one would you prefer? Ideally there should also be a bar within the reception room so the guests don't have to keep trailing in and out of the room.

Do you know what sort of food there is on offer? And the prices? Can you negotiate on that at all - hotels in England are more flexible we found, but it's still worth asking. We had a hot buffet, for less money than the standard meal, and everyone got their own food... (In case you haven't gathered I'm originally from NI, but got married in England )

Does you know what sort of evening entertainment you'd like? Do you want to to source something yourself, or will the Slieve Donard provide it? (Again check the costs!)

Will they have a room you can leave the presents in, and perhaps get changed? Will they do the table decorations?

I know this is an awful lot to take in, so I'll leave it there for now, and come back to it when I've thought some more

Someone else will be along soon with more ideas - but weekends are often quiet on Groovy, so it might be next week. We have a few NI brides around.

hiya samantha and welcome to groovy!!!!
Perhaps you could ask how many people the room can hold, for the ceremony and reception, if theres a no smoking section, will they do your table plan for you, and do they have a florist who can do the flowers for you? do they have a resident d.j or do you have to provide your own? just questions off the top of my head, bit vague i know, but then i Am a bit vague!!!!!!

Hi Samantha and to Groovy. As well as all the suggestions made I'd ask how well staffed the bar will be on the night. I went to a wedding once that had a tiny bar and only two staff on that were splitting themselves between that bar and the residents only bar and they just couldn't cope meaning we all had to queue for about twenty minutes plus to get served. The same wedding also ran out of food for the evening buffet!

If they do have a room for presents is it secure?
