I have two appointments to go and try on Wedding Dresses with my bridesmaids on 29th January and I have to admit, I\'m dreading it!
It is supposed to be good fun but I hate the thought of having to strip off in front of a shop assistant to be \'dressed up\' and told that I will have to lose weight as \'it only goes up to a size 16\', or having to stand with someone holding the back together to \'give me an idea\' as they don\'t have anything large enough in the shop!
I went to buy a ballgown once and it was so humiliating... I felt awful for days and I just know this is going to be the same.
Also I fear that i will be told that everything I like won\'t be suitable for \'big girls\', and I will end up in some meringue thing that \'hides all\'!
Anyone else going through this!?
Hi,
Your not alnoe there i can assure you, i tto dreaded going to try on dresses and even said i was going to put it off as long as possible. I had brought my bridesmaids dresses before i even thought about myself. I went eventually. (because i was geting nagged ) and actually found the experience OK, i found one dress shop (in Cambridgeshire) where the owner was great.. not once did she make me feel fat (size 20/22) and we found the perfect dress. I did got to a couple of other shops also . They were also good but didnt have what i wanted...
Thanks for the reassurance!
Still have this awful feeling though that the place will be full of trendy stick insects!
We are going to Virgin Bride and Pronuptia.
I have also got the bridesmaids dresses already!

Just go with the mind that at least its you getting married (your allowed to feel smug, its the done thing:tumble:). I finally settled on a strapless bodice with a a line skirt and a full catherdral lenght veil with crystals sewn on it.. Heh, no surprise to all the gusets that i\'m a big girl,, go girl FLAUNT IT!!!:lol::lol:
Karen I sympathise - the first few stores I went into were polite enough but when I looked at the dresses they had I realised that they really didn\'t know how to deal with a big girl (people in Brisbane are all size 8 and tanned :o ). But I got very lucky and found a store with a big assistant, and the first thing she put me in was a two piece bodice and skirt covered in crystals and strapless!!! :o After that I tried on a few others, but that was the one I went for.
If I could offer any advice it would be to walk tall and at least act confident, even if you don\'t feel it. You are about to spend a hell of a lot of money on an important item of clothing and if they do not treat you in an appropriate manner then leave and write a letter to their manager complaining (always take names!). And don\'t be scared to leave a shop if they are not helpful - there are hundreds of shops around and there will be one for you!
I know it\'s awful that we have to endure the old \'pinning to the bra\' routine when trying the dresses on, but honestly, it\'s not as bad as it sounds. When you see the front you quickly forget about the back! And it\'s not like you\'ll have to wear it like that on the day. ;)
Should they only offer you dresses that look like moomoos, then politely decline. It is a well known fact that most design houses make dresses up to very large sizes. If one store says that they can\'t accomadate you, find another. If you have ideas of the styles of dresses you\'d like to try let them know. I have to say that two piece corsets/bodices look fantastic on big girls, and incredibly modern.
Try and be confident and have an air of fun about you. But if they are rude then walk, and take your hard earned cash else where. :) Many big girls already lack confidence and I think small shop assistants sometimes jump on that. Be forthright and don\'t give them the chance!
I too went with a good friend (who\'ll be singing at the wedding \'cos I needed the moral support!!
I went to Virgin Bride last week, to look at their sale gown. Most of the samples were tiny, but there were a few in size 16 upwards - I even saw a size 28.
I would however be much more inclined to try local shops - the first one I went I tried 9 dresses in my size or bigger (size 18)- there were more, but I didn\'t like them!! :P
If you ask Bev, I think she was collating a list of \'big girl friendly dress shops\':D
Don\'t let the dread outweigh the fun of trying on the dresses - I had a ball ! (Why am I using past tense - I still haven\'t chosen mine yet!! :D:rolleyes::lol:
