Default Cake

Mornin all!:D

Just wondering where your all getting your cakes from, and when you are going to organise it if you haven\'t done already.

Getting married in June and not sure when it should be done.

Thanks
Charli xx

Hi Charli,

have organised a cake to be made by a local woman (don\'t live in area getting married) and she only does so many a year so we booked her quite early on last year.

It really depends what you want, I found a piccie of a great cake on the internet so I\'m paying the extra for it to be made but if you really don\'t mind its just as easy to go to M&S and spend about £65 and put some flowers on it, I\'ve known plenty of people who have done that and apparent ly the cake is lovely.

If you want somthing specific, I\'d get the phone book out now and start making inquiries.

What sort of cake did you want?

Ange

I\'ve got a picture of one that is 4 tiers, on on top of the other. The cake is white and blue and I love the way it has been iced.

I got the picture from a magazine that said the cake was from Pat-a-cake Pat-a-cake and should cost £400. (Wow! :o H2B nearly fainted!:lol::lol:) A woman we know said she would do it for £180 and we were dead pleased until she said she was away on the date of our wedding and that meant we could only have fruit cake. (H2B hates fruit cake!) :(

MIL2B says she knows someone else that might be able to do it for us so I suppose we should just wait for her number.

Thanks
Charli x

£180 would be an excellent price for 4 tiers, we are having 3 and its costing £300.

During all these wedding arrangements finding these people who know someone who knows someone else etc is the best way of finding suppliers who are reasonable and don\'t charge the earth when you mention the \'w\' word.

Best of luck, Ange

Hi

Is it really bad of me to not be that bothered about the cake?

I just want to get a basic, cheap one that tastes okay.

Think I\'m opting for M&S cakes and will decorate if myself.

I made an excellent Xmas cake (if i do say so myself) which everyone raved about - it was a lot of effort, but I\'m so glad i did it. I\'ve even thought about making it myself, but I don\'t know how to ice cakes..

Mel,

Why don\'t you make the cake and then getting someone to ice it for you. That way it\'ll be loads cheaper - I\'m sure most cakemakers would be happy just to ice.

Another thing we\'re not really sure about (oh the list is growing  ). As we\'re doing everything from the wrong side of the planet we\'ve been relying on the net and all the sites we\'ve looked at have been very pricey. I\'m not too fussed about it, although I\'d like it to look fairly nice, but most of them start at a certain figure - basically no one will work for less than £200 or so. We only need enough cake to feed 50 people, or less, and there is no way we\'re speding more than £150. I\'d say for what you\'re getting you have a great deal there. My mum and dad are going to the Isle of Wight to try and find things like cake makers etc, and I\'ve sent them some pictures to get quotes. I\'ve got them in a thread a few pages back on this site if you wanted to have a look. :)

We\'ll go the M&S route me thinks - Likewise Mel, we\'re not really bothered, nobody pays an awful lot of attention to it, either to look at or to eat. My Mum always costs how much making the Christmas cake costs her, so when she\'s done that, she might think about doing it herself (as her cake is really quite good), but she would probably need to buy a new tin, and that on its own is almost reason enough to buy it from M&S!! I don\'t think you can put M&S cakes on top of each other though, you have to have the pillars which doesn\'t look so \"now\" but again, I\'m really not very bothered....

We are having our cakes from Tesco and a friend and i are making edible roses and decorating it ourselves, This way we get exactly what we want for a fraction of the price of getting it made (i hate cake personally so wouldn\'t know which ones taste best) We are also buying locally some edible flowers for decorations..
Caz..:)

It worked out fairly expensive making the Xmas cake in the end. It was a 9 inch square one.

I didn\'t have any of the things I needed for it, so the cost came to about £25. But that included one-off things like an air-tight container (cos the fruit cake had to be left for a minimum of a month whilst being fed brandy - sounds like my ideal life!! hehe)

Plus, i didn\'t have the board, the tin, greaseproof paper etc.

I\'m sure that if you make 3 tiers though, economies of scale would start to hit in..

Its more about the hassle of it all and having to arrange to get it iced on top.

M&S just seems much less trouble.

Though it would be nice to have made the cakes...

Mel you are probably right - don\'t think I could be bothered with making my own cake -especially with all the other organising that needs to be done!

my mum is making me a christmas/wedding type cake and then my aunt is decorating it. You should ask around I know 4 people who are pretty good at the cake decorating thing, you might know someone who could do it for cheap!!
or look and see if there are any cake decorating classes at the local college, see if anyone there will make you one. they will be dying to practise so wil probably be cheap and pretty good (although check out if they have any pictures first - my guess is you don\'t want to end up with a \'snow scene\'!!

Hi stella,

I think I will ask around.. there may well be someone in Ben\'s family that can do it..

I thought it would be easy to make the icing flat, but it was really difficult. Gave up and went for the snow drift effect...!!
