I went to Nassau (the capital of the Bahamas) about 8-10 years ago (sorry cant remember exactly when!) and we stayed in a lovely hotel (they filmed a James Bond movie there apparently). HOWEVER we were warned not to venture outside our hotel by tour reps. But on the odd occasion when we did (about twice I think) we had 1 guy follow us around for an hour

trying to get us to go on a guided tour with him and he would not take no for an answer. It got quite scary but we were OK in the end.
As to the Bahamas itself it is beautiful (well what I saw of it), the sea is so warm and blue and I snorkelled on the surface of the water and the different types of fish are amazing. The food was nice from what I can remember, and we went on a day trip to a place called Paradise Island which was lovely. Mostly though we stayed in the hotel by the pool.
WORD OF WARNING: My mother slapped factor 25 on us ever half an hour (it was the highest factor cream we could get in the UK) and I was so badly burnt and had awful sun stroke that I screamed the place down when my dad tried to put sun lotion on me to cool it down. I was red all over, could not lay down or sit it, was awful. I had hundreds of blisters all over too and was very sick. If you go, buy your sun protection scream over there - we later found out from the hotel when we asked them for advice on how to treat me that they use factors 50+!!!!
Would I go again? Yes I think I would. I have heard that a lot has changed in Nassau since then and it would be nice to go back and experience it as an adult rather than a young kid. Mel is going there for her honeymoon, and has been lots of times before and loves it. I think we just went at the wrong time and had a few bad experiences. Oh, if you go, be sure to go to a straw market - they are great!
