FLOWERS
Flowers make a very important contribution to the success of the occasion. The bride and bridesmaids usually carry bouquets or posies, and the bride may choose
to wear one or more flowers in her hair or on her head-dress. At one time the bride's flowers had to be white, but this no longer applies. A large bouquet will look
well with a long dress and train, but may overpower a shorter dress, when a smaller posy would be more appropriate.
A neat corsage is suitable for both mothers.
The principal men of the wedding parties normally wear carnation buttonholes on the left lapels of their jackets. While carnations are the usual choice, but the groom,
best man, and fathers sometimes have double red ones. Those worn by ushers are single blooms.
In the case of a Register Office wedding, the premises may already be decorated with flowers. Check with the Superintendent/Chief Registrar. If flowers are not already there, ask permission to set up a simple display prior to the ceremony.
In approved premises, the proprietor may include the provision of flowers in the register room and at the reception. If not, it might again be possible to arrange your
own displays.
If the wedding is to take place in church, the minister’s consent will be needed to decorate the church, so liaise closely with him or her. It may also be possible to
combine with other couples being married in the church on the same day. The minister will be able to supply their names and addresses, and may also be able to
suggest someone who will help with the decoration, in return for a small donation.
Always liaise closely with your florist. Remember that he or she is the expert and can provide invaluable advice about colours, themes, styles, and the availability of
certain blooms and blossoms at various times of year.
Remember too, when ordering flowers, that it is customary to give both mothers a bouquet or flower arrangement at the reception.
