Anyone been to the Maldives?
I was just wondering of any of you well travelled lot have been to the Maldives? We are trying to decide where to go on Honeymoon and that is the top of Marks wish list. I agree it looks beautiful but im a little bit worried there wont be a lot to do there. Dont get me wrong, im not looking to be out clubbing or anything but im not really one for laying around a pool or on a beach all day and would like to be able to do stuff - swim with dolphins, scuba dive, sightsee, etc. but none of the brochures we have looked at mention anything.
Mark works really, really hard all year with hardly any days off (you could count them on your fingers) so i totally understand why he wants a place where he can relax to his hearts content but we both know there will be times when we will want to do stuff and we would like to have that option.
If there are activities then thats where we'll end up going as, like Mark said, if we dont do it now, itll be 15 years before we can as we wouldnt take kids there so we'd quite like to know some more about it so we can decide.
If anyone has any other suggestion as to where we can both relax and do stuff its be greatly appreciated too!
Thanks guys x

Hi Paula,
I haven't been to the Maldives but it was in the top three for our honeymoon - list went Mauritius, Grenada, Maldives. We chose not to go to the Maldives for the exact same reasons you're concerned. Neither one of us, lazy though we are, feel that we'd be able to just lie around on the beach for a fortnight. I like to swim, but snorkling isn't my cup of tea and neither is diving! The atolls are very small so there isn't really any sightseeing (to the best of my understanding).
We also ruled Mauritius out because of the weather in July. I read a lot of honeymoon reports from people who had been there this year and they were really disappointed by the July weather, which was much worse than described by the travel industry. So, since we didn't want to put off the honeymoon till autumn/winter, we ruled that off too...
So, we plumped for Grenada as the weather should be okay - it is the rainy season but there won't be constant rain. Its well below the hurricane belt (closer to Venuzela than the other islands, so v.south) so no worries there - somewhat obscurely mum is terribly worried about us going there in July despite her dragging us to Barbados in July/August on numerous occasions. Perhaps she would like to come along to ensure there are no hurricanes? Ahem, anyway.... Grenada is nice and unspoilt. It has many preservation orders and also restrictions on building height/size so as not to ruin the views. There is plenty sightseeing available within the island and also on the ocean - you can go dolphin/whale spotting!; sail around the Grenadines; go for picnics on desert islands... My boss (evil though she is) rates it highly and she only ever does tropical holidays
Anyway, hope that helps a little!

We're going to the Maldives, but prefacing it with a few days in Dubai. There are lots of clubs, activities, sight-seeing opps in Dubai, so we figured we'd wear ourselves out there then go off for 8 days of total r and r, with some scuba-diving etc in the Maldives. I wanted a city break and a beach break, and it seemed like a perfect compromise. Can't wait!

We're also going to the Maldives. I completely love lounging on a beach and H2B is going to learn to sail (so he says). The resort we've chosen is all inclusive (even alcohol ) and they have a variety of evening entertainment - discos, theme evenings etc.
I've heard that Mauritius is more commercialised with a lot more to do, so I guess they have a bit of everything.

I would love to go however H2B is terrified of flying and I think going to the Maldives you would have to get on one of those sea plane thingys - so I have got no chance of getting there
I have even let my H2B arrange our Honeymoon as a suprise
god only knows where I will end up going !! Hmmmmmm:confused:

We're transferring from the main airport in the Maldives to our hotel (Soneva Fushi) island by sea-plane - apparently it's spectacular! Fortunately I'm a plane-spotting freak (I lurrrve flying) - to the degree that I adore airports and watch 'Airport' and 'Airline' religiously - so I can't wait!!!

Friends of mine went there for their honeymoon and said it was just beautiful. They both love lying around tanning themselves and said it was perfect for that. There was one sightseeing boat tour and that was it for activites (ignoring the water sports that is).
The best place I have been to is Figi. you can go island hopping - staying on different islands for X number of nights. Pity it is so far away as I would love to go back there for mine. If anyone gets the chance, i would recommend Beachcomer Island and tresure island....oh I wish I was back there now!!

YES YES YES ...........
Helllooooooo,
ive just got back from the maldives this week with my Husband we went for our honeymoon on 28th july and it was absolutley fantastic. its absolute paradise and i would highly reccomend it.
we went to a resort called Vilu Reef, it was perfect for what we wanted just a relaxing holiday but we went on excursions dolphin cruise (no sorry you cant swim with them! ) but they are fantastic to see in the wild. we went night fishing which was great one of the couples we met there caught a baby shark!!!!! but they threw it back in . we also went to a local island for 1/2 a day to see how the others live it was very interesting.there was enough for us anyway as we didnt want a clubbing holiday we had crab races in the bar once a week and they had maldivian nights/discos etc. candlelit dinners on the beach.
have a look at there website www.vilureef.com i cant praise it up enough everyone there were fantastic (waiters/reception/bar etc) and the food was also fantastic.
the sea is stunning crystal clear waters with loads of tropical fish in all different pretty colours.
all i can say is GO FOR IT if i havnt persuaded you enough already
Good Luck
Luv
claire (MRS EVANS!!! hehe thats the 1st time ive written that!)
let me know if you want to see any piccies and ill post some.
oh and 1 more thing we did have rain every day for the 1st week but only in short bursts of about 1/2 hour or so but it is the monsoon season from july to sept however it was still in the high 30's every day.

It was sounding really good there and you almost persuaded me.....untill the bit about it being monsoon season!!! Isnt that a bit dodgy to go then or am i being an idiot as usual!! We dont want a clubby holiday either but id quite like the option to spend some of my days doing stuff rather than sunbathing. On the other hand though, after all the run up to the wedding and the stress, i may well want two weeks of doing nothing so im now a bit stuck. Youve made it sound really good - could i see some piccies please to help our decision along!??
Marks gonna love you when he hears this - hes been dying for someone to tell me how fantastic it is!!
Thanks xx

great.
we booked with JMC it cost £3400 for 2 weeks all inclusive. we upgraded to a beach bungalow but they do have garden bungalows in the middle of the island they dont have a sea view though but the beach is only a few metre's away. i would reccomend the beach bungalows though, its heaven as the beach and sea is right outside the door. i wouldnt advise you to book anything other than all inclusive as it is very expensive if you we to by all your booze and food. as a rough idea 1 x half of lager was £3 !!! , malabu and pineapple was about £7 but we didnt pay a penny for it. we deffinatly got our money's worth there anyway. the excursions vary from $10 usd upwards the dolphin trip cost us about £12 each but was well worth the money. we took £600 spending money and spent £350 and we had a wale of a time and i cant fit into my bloody jeans now !! heres some piccies for you they havnt scanned great but it gives you an idea what its like.
let me know what you decide
luv

Wow that looks amazing
We were thinking of going to the Maldives at one point cos it looks so nice and we really fancied staying in one of the little bungalow/cottage type things....I'm the worlds worst person at sitting about doing nothing for 2 weeks.. we'd probably end up filing for divorce by the end of the honeymoon!! So we're going to Galley Bay in Antigua instead (booking it on Monday which is also my birthday) cos it's got the lovely ickle cottages to stay in, a fab beach, fantastic weather and most importantly things to go and see if you want to!
Soooooooo excited, can't wait!!
