AS you all know I am looking for somewhere where I can have a Marquee in the ground. I went to Catton Hall for a Client day where we had activities and things and thought it would be ideal for a wedding reception. To hire the rooms in the house for drinks and the grounds for a marquee it is around £1500. You can have it for as long as you like and they even sent me a long list of marquee companies and caterers. I think this is quite reasonable...
This would mean I would want to have the ceremony in St Chads Cathedral in Brum (I went there for around 10 years when I was growing up) and it would mean around a half hour drive at most to the reception venue..is this too long do you think? I was thinking of hiring a mini bus for the day to do trips backwards and forth to Bham City centre so people can go early or later as they please and also get the mini bus to the reception after the actual ceremony if they want to leave the cars? Also, people would be able to get to the evening 'do' and not have to drive and therefore not drink?
How far would you expect to drive for a reception? Some of my family are going to be over from ireland so it will be all the same to them and they can go on the minibus.
Thoughts please groovers, I have about a million ideas going round in my head...

Also, I was having other thoughts...H2B is very musical and I would love to have a concert for charity in the marquee the day after so it gets two uses. We went to a concert a while back on a sunday that had been used for a wedding the day before. It would also make 'more of a weekend' of it for the travellers......I'm sure the owners of Catton Hall would be prepared to negotiate a fee and we would have no problem getting an orchestra to play for nothing..>Whatya think?

That venue looks totally stunning & perfect for a marquee too! The price seems very reasonable & they seem as if they're used to organising the sort of wedding that you have in mind, especaily as they sent you the info on Marquees etc!!
Half an hour to travel doesn't seem unreasonable at all between the church & reception.... I'm sure the majority of your guests will feel the same!
Go for it!

That venue looks lovely and the price sounds really good too. Its great that they sent you the details of the marquee's etc so it sounds as though they are used to organising that sort of thing.
Sounds like a great idea to have a concert the day after too. Makes a real weekend of it for everyone.
I don't think half an hour to travel from the church to the reception is too far at all and I'm sure your guests won't mind either.
Rooley i think youve found your perfect venue!! Looks fab to me and resonably priced, go for it id say!! I dont think half an hour is too far at all especially if you lay on buses and what a great idea re the concert.

Thanks everyone..we are going to go and see it this weekend I think...hopefully we will get that shivery feeling we always get when things are meant to be. Jack is really looking forward to going and seeing it and I have e-mailed all of the marquee companies for prices and found a travel inn and travel lodge really near by for people to stay over.
I'm still going to look at other venues..but you're right, this fulfills all my criteria and is a good location.

Rooley, that looks divine! Really luxurious and special!
My guests all had to travel at least 45 minutes to my venue and none of them seemed to mind..... hiring a minibus is a great idea if you can find one (plus a driver) at a reasonable price - but have certain times for pick ups and drops offs, don't shuttle all day!

I've just had a quote back from a marquee hire place.....it's £1700 for the marquee for two days including putting it up, taking it down, the nice gold chairs, round tables and a top table, entrance hall, kitchen attachment, dancefloor, carpet, windowed traditional marquee...swagging and lineing (whatever colour I want) and an area for the DJ which we won't need as we are having a band.
I'm going to see if I can get one cheaper but it's a good benchmark I thought....
